What exactly is the Simon Simpad86?

Accepted Answer

It is a 4-inch touchscreen that replaces a switch plate on the wall. It controls Simon Smart Zigbee devices around the house, lights, dimmers, curtains, sensors and scenes, and it carries its own Zigbee gateway inside. It is the smallest panel Simon makes, sized for a single 86mm wall box.

Will it work on UAE mains at 220-240V?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Simon's datasheet rates the power supply at 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz, a universal input that covers UAE supply at 220-240V and 50Hz. It is hardwired to live and neutral behind the plate, like a normal switch. No transformer, no voltage converter and no US-only wiring problem to work around.

Does it fit the wall boxes we have in Dubai?

Accepted Answer

It is built for the 86 x 86mm European square box, which is what most Dubai villas and towers already have. Some older British-spec fit-outs use UK-pattern boxes instead. We open one plate during the site visit and confirm both the pattern and the depth before anything is ordered.

Can I install it myself?

Accepted Answer

No. It is hardwired to live and neutral inside a live wall, so it is electrical work. In Dubai that means a licensed electrician or a certified Simon Smart dealer, and most building managements will ask to see the contractor's trade licence and insurance before letting work start.

Question 5

Do I need a separate hub or gateway with it?

Accepted Answer

Not for a Zigbee-only Simon Smart system. The panel has the Zigbee coordinator built into it and carries more than 100 sub-devices on its own. You still need house Wi-Fi for the app, remote access and voice. On a large villa we spread the device count across more than one gateway at design stage.

What else do I have to buy for the panel to be useful?

Accepted Answer

Simon Smart Zigbee devices. The panel is a controller, and no lighting load runs through it, so it needs Simon i7, E6, E3 or M3 switches, dimmers, curtain motors or sensors working behind it. On its own it is a screen with nothing to control. We spec the device list room by room.

Which app does it use?

Accepted Answer

The Simon Smart app, on iOS and Android. The panel pairs by scanning a QR code during setup, and the same account then gives you the rooms and scenes on your phone. We create the account in the homeowner's name at commissioning, so your house is never tied to our login.

Question 8

Does it work with Alexa and Google Home?

Accepted Answer

Voice runs through your Simon Smart account linked to Alexa or Google Home, so lights, curtains and scenes can be spoken to. This SKU has no speaker of its own, so the listening part comes from an Echo or Nest speaker in the room. We link the accounts and test it at handover.

Does it work with Apple Home?

Accepted Answer

Simon does not publish Apple HomeKit certification for the Simpad86, so we will not promise you Apple Home control with it. If everyone in the house is on iPhone and Apple Home is a firm requirement, tell us at design stage and we will plan the lighting around a system that states it.

Question 10

Can I retrofit it into an existing villa, or is it only for new fit-outs?

Accepted Answer

It retrofits well when the existing box is the 86mm square type, a neutral is present and the depth is there. The bigger part of the job sits behind it: Simon Zigbee switches and curtain motors have to go in at their own positions, which means access to switch points around the villa.

What happens if the internet goes down?

Accepted Answer

Control between the panel and your Simon devices runs locally over Zigbee, so the wall panel keeps working when the internet drops. What stops is the phone app from outside the house, voice assistants and cloud automations. Your wall switches also keep working by hand, which is the point of doing it this way.

How is it different from the bigger Simon HomePad panels?

Size and role. The Simpad86 is 4 inches in a single 86mm box, right for a bedroom, a guest room or a corridor. The HomePad panels are larger screens for an entrance wall or a majlis where everyone gathers. Most villas we design use one big panel and several small ones.

Why pay for this instead of a cheaper Aqara panel?

Accepted Answer

An Aqara panel with an Aqara hub costs far less and works with a wide, cheap device range. The Simon route buys matched plates across every switch position in the villa and one supplier for the whole accessory set. If budget is the deciding factor, Aqara is the honest answer and we fit plenty of it.

Question 14

Will it control my Philips Hue lights or Aqara sensors?

Accepted Answer

No. It talks to Simon Smart Zigbee devices only. Philips Hue bulbs, Aqara sensors and Sonoff modules stay on their own apps and hubs. If you want one screen for a mixed-brand house, that is a different design, usually a third-party controller sitting above all of the systems.

Does it have a speaker or a voice assistant built in?

Accepted Answer

Not on this one. The white-frame S00E0-S026 runs Android with a plain Zigbee gateway and no speaker. Simon also sells a black-frame S00E0-S042 with a built-in Alexa speaker and a dual Zigbee plus Bluetooth mesh gateway. The two look alike in photos, so we print the SKU on the quote.

Which version do you quote by default?

Accepted Answer

The S00E0-S026: white frame, Android, Zigbee gateway, no speaker. That is the version this page describes. If you want the black frame with the Alexa speaker and the Zigbee plus BLE mesh gateway, that is the S00E0-S042, a separate line on the quote with its own stock position and lead time.

Question 17

How many panels does a villa actually need?

Accepted Answer

Fewer than most people expect. One at the entrance, one in the master bedroom and one in the majlis covers nearly all daily use. Every other position is better served by a normal Simon smart switch plate. Putting a panel at every switch point adds a lot of cost and gives back very little.

Question 18

Can it handle Dubai summer heat?

Accepted Answer

The panel is rated 0C to 40C and 5% to 90% humidity, so it is an indoor, air-conditioned device. Inside a Dubai home that is comfortable. Do not plan one for a garage, a shaded terrace, a plant room or a store, where July temperatures go well past what the screen is rated for.

Can I put one in the bathroom or outside by the pool?

Not outdoors, and not inside a wet bathroom zone. It is an indoor panel with no IP rating against splashing, and the box behind it is a normal dry wall box. If you want bathroom lights on a screen, the dry corridor wall or the bedroom side of the wall is the sensible position.

How do you price it and what is the lead time?

We quote it per project, because Simon moves through the dealer channel in the UAE rather than retail shelves. Send us the room list and the switch positions, we price the panel with the Simon devices behind it, then confirm stock and lead time with the distributor before you commit to anything.

Question 21

What about warranty and support in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

Simon does not publish consumer warranty terms for this panel, so we confirm the warranty in writing on the quote, from the distributor, before you order. Support in the UAE runs through the dealer channel rather than a retail returns desk, which is one more reason to buy it inside an installed job.

Who should not buy this panel?

Accepted Answer

Anyone wanting a plug-in DIY gadget, one screen for a mixed-brand house, or a cheap panel in every room. Renters should skip it too, since the wiring stays in the wall when you move. It is for an owner putting Simon plates through the home and wanting a tidy control point.

Question 23

Does my lighting circuit run through the panel?

Accepted Answer

No. Only live and neutral come to the panel, and no lamp or load wiring passes through it. The switching is done by Simon Zigbee modules at their own positions. That keeps the panel cool, and it means the lights still work by hand if the panel is ever taken off for service.

Question 24

Can it control the curtains and the AC?

Accepted Answer

Curtains yes, through Simon Zigbee curtain motors, and they end up being the most used button on any panel we hand over. Split AC needs a compatible Zigbee thermostat or control module added to the design, so tell us the AC brand and type early and we will confirm what is possible.

Question 25

Will it work with my existing KNX or Lutron system?

Accepted Answer

No. It is a Zigbee panel for the Simon Smart system and it does not speak KNX, nor does it join a Lutron lighting system. If your villa already has KNX in the walls, the right answer is a KNX panel on that bus. We look at the existing distribution board before advising.
