Start with what the sensor is for, because the two halves of this category are bought for opposite reasons. Automation sensors decide when lights, AC and curtains should act. Safety sensors sit quietly for years and earn their cost on the one night something goes wrong.
For automation, the choice is presence or motion. A motion sensor uses infrared to detect movement, so it is quick, cheap and reliable for a corridor, a store room or a stairwell where nobody stands still. It fails in a majlis or a study, because when you stop moving it decides the room is empty and kills the lights. A presence sensor uses millimetre-wave radar to detect a person who is simply sitting there, which is what makes automated lighting usable in rooms people occupy.
