Overview

What it is and where it fits

The entry-level contact sensor in the Aqara range and the right pick if you simply need to know whether a door or window is open. It needs an Aqara hub, bought once for the property rather than per sensor. Two magnetic halves stick to the door and the frame with adhesive pads, and the sensor reports open or closed to the hub over Zigbee. The use that earns its keep in Dubai is the AC interlock: a contact on the balcony or terrace door that switches the split unit in that room off when the door is left open, so the AC is not fighting a 45 degree afternoon through a gap. The second common use is a leaving-home check, so the app names the door that was left ajar instead of making you walk the house. The coin cell runs for roughly two years and the hub warns you before it dies, which matters because contact sensors are the devices people forget exist until one goes quiet. The T1 speaks Zigbee only, so it reaches Apple Home, Alexa or Google through the hub rather than on its own. If you want the sensor visible in Apple Home without an Aqara hub, buy the P2 instead.

  • Turns the AC off in a room when the balcony door is left open
  • Tells you which door was left ajar as you leave
  • Sticks on in under a minute with no drilling
  • Reports its own low battery before it goes silent

What to check before you order

The balcony door interlock is the reason most Dubai clients fit these. A split unit running with the terrace door open burns electricity for no cooling, and a two-dirham-a-day habit is easy to miss on a DEWA bill. Adhesive holds well on painted wood and powder-coated aluminium frames, which covers most villa and apartment joinery here, but it needs the surface wiped with alcohol first because construction dust settles fast. On sliding aluminium balcony doors the frame return is often too narrow for the magnet half, so we mount the magnet on the moving leaf face rather than the edge. The sensor is Zigbee, so it will not work without an Aqara hub in the property.

Aqara in the UAE. Sold through several authorised UAE resellers rather than one exclusive distributor. Wide local stock and the broadest single-hub ecosystem available in UAE retail.

Questions about the Aqara Door and Window Sensor T1

Do I need an Aqara hub for this sensor?
Chevron down icon
Yes. The T1 talks Zigbee, which your phone and router cannot hear directly, so a hub translates it into something Apple Home, Alexa or Google can use. The hub is a single purchase for the whole property and it carries every other Aqara sensor you add later, so the cost only lands once.

Can it actually switch my air conditioning off?
Chevron down icon
It can trigger the switch-off, provided the AC itself is controllable. Pair it with an infrared AC controller or a smart thermostat and the automation is straightforward: door open for two minutes, AC in that room goes off, door closed, AC returns to its previous setting. Without a controllable AC the sensor can only send you a notification.

Should I buy the T1 or the P2?
Chevron down icon
Buy the T1 if you already have an Aqara hub or are fitting several sensors, because it is the cheaper unit and the hub cost is shared. Buy the P2 if you want the sensor to appear in Apple Home over Thread with no Aqara hub at all, and you already run a Thread border router such as a HomePod or Apple TV.
