Overview

What it is and where it fits

A conventional PIR motion sensor with an unusually long battery life, and the correct choice for spaces people pass through rather than sit in. Corridors, stairwells, store rooms, laundry areas and guest bathrooms are where it belongs. Understand what a PIR does before fitting one: it detects a change in infrared across its field of view, which means it sees movement, not people. Sit still on a majlis sofa for four minutes and the lights go out, because from the sensor's point of view the room emptied. For any room where people sit, buy the FP1E or the FP2 instead. Within its proper use the P1 is excellent. Two coin cells give a claimed five years, the detection interval is adjustable from one second upwards so a corridor light can react instantly rather than on a stock thirty second delay, and it covers roughly seven metres across a 170 degree arc. It is Zigbee, so an Aqara hub is required. Mounting is a magnetic ball base on adhesive, which lets you angle it down a corridor properly instead of accepting whatever the ceiling gives you.

  • Up to five years on a set of batteries
  • Reacts in one second instead of a fixed long delay
  • Angles properly down a corridor on its magnetic base
  • The right sensor for spaces people walk through, not sit in

What to check before you order

Fit these in villa corridors, staircases, store rooms and maid's rooms, where the lights should come on as someone enters and go off shortly after. Avoid pointing a PIR at a window with direct afternoon sun or at an AC vent, because a fast temperature swing across the lens is exactly what a passive infrared sensor is built to notice and both will trigger false detections. In Dubai that matters more than in cooler climates: a west-facing corridor window and a hard-blowing split unit are both common. For any majlis, living room, study or bedroom, this is the wrong sensor and a presence sensor is the right one.

Questions about the Aqara Motion Sensor P1

Why do my lights turn off while I am still in the room?
Chevron down icon
Because a PIR sensor detects movement, not occupancy. Once you stop moving, the sensor reports the room as empty and the light times out. No settings change fixes this properly. The answer is a millimetre wave presence sensor such as the FP1E or FP2 in rooms where people sit still.

How long do the batteries really last?
Chevron down icon
Aqara rate it at up to five years and that is achievable in a low-traffic corridor with a longer detection interval. Set to a one second interval in a busy hallway it reports far more often and you should expect meaningfully less. The hub warns you at low battery either way.

Can it trigger a camera or an alarm rather than a light?
Chevron down icon
Yes. Through the hub it can start a camera recording, arm or trigger an alarm scene, or send a notification when motion is detected while the house is set to away. Motion sensors are often more useful as a security trigger in store rooms and side entrances than as a lighting trigger.
