Overview

What it is and where it fits

Millimetre wave presence detection at roughly a third of the FP2 price, connecting over Matter so it joins Apple Home, Alexa or Google with no vendor hub and no extra app. If the reason you are reading this page is that your motion-triggered lights keep switching off on people sitting still, this is the least expensive fix available. Like every radar presence sensor it detects a stationary person through breathing and micro-movement, so a room stays occupied while someone reads, works or watches television. It also reads ambient light in most variants, which lets an automation require both presence and darkness before switching anything on. Set expectations against the Aqara units. This gives a single presence answer for the space rather than the FP2's drawn zones, and the configuration options are fewer. For a bedroom, a study, a home office or a small sitting area that is the correct amount of capability and the zoning would go unused. For a fifty square metre villa living room where the seating and dining ends should behave differently, the FP2 is worth the difference. It takes continuous USB-C power, as all radar sensors do.

  • Lights hold while people sit still, unlike a motion sensor
  • Joins Apple Home or Google directly with no vendor hub
  • Light level condition stops daytime false triggers
  • The lowest cost entry into presence detection

What to check before you order

A sensible first presence sensor for a Dubai apartment, where rooms are smaller and zoning adds little, and where an Apple or Google household usually already has a Matter controller sitting on the TV unit. It needs constant USB power, which in a finished apartment normally means mounting near an existing socket at high level and accepting a short visible cable run, or planning the supply properly during a fit-out. Radar carries through gypsum partitions, so avoid mounting it flat against a stud wall shared with a corridor or the neighbouring unit, or it will report presence in an empty room. For large open villa living areas, the Aqara FP2 and its zones are the better specification.

Questions about the Meross Matter Smart Presence Sensor

Is this good enough or should I pay for the FP2?
Chevron down icon
For a bedroom, study, home office or small sitting area, this is enough and the FP2's zoning would sit unused. Pay the difference for the FP2 when one large open room needs different behaviour in different parts of it, which in Dubai usually means a villa living and dining space.

What do I need for it to work?
Chevron down icon
A Matter controller already in the house, meaning a HomePod, an Apple TV, a compatible Echo or a Nest Hub, plus a USB power supply at the mounting position. No Meross hub and no second app are required, which is the main advantage over the hub-based sensors in this range.

Why does it need mains power when my motion sensor runs on a battery?
Chevron down icon
Because radar transmits continuously rather than waiting passively for a heat change. That constant operation is exactly what lets it detect someone sitting still, and it is far beyond what a coin cell can supply. Every presence sensor worth buying is mains powered for this reason.
