Overview

What it is and where it fits

A natural gas detector for kitchens on a piped methane supply, with a local sounder and a phone alert through an Aqara hub. Check which gas you have before ordering, because this is the one product in this category people buy incorrectly. Natural gas is lighter than air and collects at ceiling level, so this detector mounts high, within about thirty centimetres of the ceiling and near the appliance. Many UAE kitchens instead run on LPG cylinders, and LPG is heavier than air and pools at floor level. A methane detector mounted at ceiling height in an LPG kitchen may not usefully warn you, and that is a serious enough difference to get right rather than assume. If your kitchen runs off a cylinder, ask for an LPG-rated detector mounted low instead of buying this one. Where it does apply it works well: mains powered rather than battery, since a gas sensor cannot be run on a coin cell, with a self-test cycle and fault reporting to the app. Paired with a hub it can also trigger surrounding actions, and the most sensible one is an alert to every phone in the household rather than anything clever.

  • Warns of a natural gas leak locally and on your phone
  • Mains powered so there is no battery to forget
  • Reports its own fault status rather than failing silently
  • Alerts the household while nobody is in the kitchen

What to check before you order

Gas detection is more relevant in Dubai villas than apartments, since villa kitchens commonly run on either a piped supply or an LPG cylinder in a side store. Identify which before ordering. Communities with piped natural gas are the correct application for this detector and it goes high on the wall near the hob. Cylinder kitchens need an LPG-rated detector mounted close to floor level, because the gas is heavier than air and settles, and putting the wrong sensor at the wrong height is worse than having none, since it creates false confidence. Any suspected leak in either case is a matter for the gas supplier and Civil Defence, not something to manage through a phone app. Treat this device as an early warning that gets you to act sooner.

Questions about the Aqara Smart Gas Detector

Will this work with my LPG cylinder kitchen?
Chevron down icon
It is a natural gas detector, so no, and this is the mistake worth avoiding. Methane rises and this unit mounts near the ceiling. LPG is heavier than air and collects near the floor, so a ceiling-mounted methane detector is the wrong sensor in the wrong position. Ask for an LPG-rated detector fitted low if your kitchen runs on cylinders.

How do I know which gas my kitchen uses?
Chevron down icon
If there is a cylinder in a side store or under the counter, it is LPG. If gas arrives through a fixed pipe with a meter and a community supply, it is usually natural gas. Building management or your gas supplier will confirm it. Send us a photo of the supply and we will tell you which detector is correct.

Does it shut the gas off automatically?
Chevron down icon
Not on its own. It detects and alerts. Automatic shut-off requires a motorised valve fitted to the gas line, which is work for the gas supplier and not a consumer retrofit. Anyone offering to bolt an automatic gas valve onto a domestic supply as a smart home accessory should be treated with caution.
