What does this sensor actually do?

Accepted Answer

It watches a room with a passive infrared lens and tells a paired Lutron Caseta dimmer, switch or fan control to switch on when someone walks in, then off after the room has been empty for a set time. It does not light anything itself and it does not control other brands.

Question 2

Will it work on UAE 220-240V power?

Accepted Answer

The sensor never touches mains, so voltage does not apply to it. One CR123A 3V lithium battery runs it and the radio link to the dimmer is low power. The 220-240V question belongs to the Caseta dimmer or switch you pair it with, which is bought separately and must be a 220-240V rated model.

Does it fit our EU or UK wall boxes?

Accepted Answer

It does not go in a wall box at all. There is no back box, no conduit and no faceplate. It either sits on a shelf or screws to a wall or ceiling corner with the bracket supplied. Wall box format only matters for the Caseta dimmer it commands, and that does sit in a box.

Do I need an electrician or a certified Lutron dealer to fit it?

Accepted Answer

Not for the sensor. It is battery powered with no live connection, so anyone can mount it and pair it in about ten minutes. The dimmer or switch it controls is a different matter. That is mains wiring, and in Dubai that work belongs to a licensed electrician.

Do I need the Caseta Smart Bridge hub?

Accepted Answer

Not for basic automatic on and off. Lutron lets the sensor pair straight to a Caseta dimmer or switch, point to point. You need the Smart Bridge only if you also want phone app control, sunrise and sunset schedules, scenes, or Alexa, Google and Apple Home voice control.

What else must I buy for it to do anything?

Accepted Answer

At least one Caseta dimmer, switch or fan control, for example a PD-6WCL, PD-6ANS, PD-5NE or PD-FSQN. The sensor has no relay and no output of its own, so with no Caseta device in the property it does nothing. The battery is already in the box.

Which app controls it?

Accepted Answer

The Lutron app, and only if you have added a Caseta Smart Bridge. Without the bridge there is no app involved at all. Pairing is a button press on the dimmer and a button press on the sensor, and the sensor's own controls handle the basic settings.

Question 8

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home?

Accepted Answer

Only through a Caseta Smart Bridge. Add the bridge and the Caseta lights show up in all three, so you can ask Alexa to turn the majlis lights off while the sensor still handles the automatic switching. The sensor itself runs on Lutron's own radio and is not exposed to those platforms as a separate device.

Can I retrofit this into a villa that is already finished?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The sensor needs no wiring, so it goes into a completed home without touching a wall or a ceiling. The retrofit work, if any, is the Caseta dimmer replacing an existing switch in its wall box, which an electrician does in minutes per point once the circuit is isolated.

How does it compare with the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 you also sell?

Accepted Answer

The Aqara costs a fraction of it, runs on Zigbee and needs an Aqara hub, but it can then trigger anything in the house: lights, AC, curtains, cameras. The Lutron only speaks to Caseta hardware. Buy the Lutron if your lighting is already Caseta. Buy the Aqara if one sensor should drive several systems.

What about the Aqara FP2 presence sensor?

The FP2 uses millimetre wave radar and detects a person who is sitting still, which this Lutron cannot do. It also splits a room into zones. The trade is that the FP2 needs permanent USB power and an Aqara account, while the Lutron runs about ten years on one battery and needs neither.

Will it switch the lights off while I am sitting still?

Accepted Answer

It can. Passive infrared reads movement, not breathing, so a long still spell on a sofa or a prayer mat can read as an empty room. For a majlis or a TV room, set a longer timeout, aim the sensor across the seating rather than straight at it, or use radar presence sensing instead.

What is the difference between occupancy mode and vacancy mode?

Accepted Answer

Occupancy mode does both halves: lights on when you enter, off when you leave. Vacancy mode only does the off, so you press the switch yourself and the sensor makes sure nothing is left burning. Vacancy suits bedrooms and a majlis, where a light coming on by itself is unwelcome.

How long does the battery last and can I buy CR123A in Dubai?

Accepted Answer

Lutron rates the CR123A cell at around ten years in normal use, and one is supplied. CR123A is a standard camera and torch battery, stocked by electronics shops across Dubai and easy to order online, so you are not tied to a Lutron part or an import for a replacement.

Can I put it in a bathroom?

Accepted Answer

A dry powder room is fine. A main bathroom with a shower is not the right place. The unit is rated for indoor use between 0 and 40 degrees and carries no moisture rating, so steam and splashing will shorten its life. For wet rooms use a sensor built for that job.

Question 16

Can I use it outdoors, on a terrace or in the car port?

Accepted Answer

No. Lutron rates it for indoor use only, 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. A Dubai car port or terrace sits above 40 degrees for months and carries dust and humidity the housing is not sealed against. Outdoor motion lighting needs a weather rated sensor or a camera with its own floodlight.

Will Dubai summer heat cause problems indoors?

Accepted Answer

Inside an air conditioned villa, no. What matters is where you point it. Passive infrared triggers on moving heat, so a sensor facing a sunlit window, a hot glass door or the airflow from a split unit can false trigger through the afternoon. Aim it at the doorway and away from glass.

Can two sensors control one light, or one sensor control several lights?

Accepted Answer

A long villa corridor with two entrances usually needs a sensor at each end, and Caseta pairing is done per device rather than strictly one to one, so multiple assignments are normal. We confirm the exact combination against the dimmer model you own before ordering, because a dimmer, a switch and a fan control behave differently.

Can it control the AC, the curtains or anything besides lights?

Accepted Answer

Only Caseta hardware, which means lights and Caseta fan controls. It cannot talk to a split AC, a curtain motor, a lock or a camera. If you want motion to drive several systems at once, a hub based sensor such as Aqara, or a full lighting control system, is the better route.

Question 20

Does it need Wi-Fi or an working internet connection?

Accepted Answer

No. The sensor and the dimmer talk on Lutron's own radio and keep working with the router unplugged and du or Etisalat down. Internet only matters if you added a Smart Bridge and want remote app access or voice, and even then the local switching carries on regardless.

What is the lead time and how do you quote it?

Accepted Answer

The sensor is a marketplace import, so stock moves. Delivery is usually a few days to about two weeks depending on the seller. We quote it as separate lines: the sensors, the Caseta dimmers, the bridge if you want app control, and the electrical labour to change the switch points.

What warranty and support do I get in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

Lutron's own limited warranty covers Caseta hardware, but there is no Lutron office in the UAE to walk into for this range. A claim or a return goes back through the seller you bought from, here Amazon.ae and DesertcartAE, so keep the invoice and the packaging for the first year at least.

Will pets set it off?

Accepted Answer

Probably, if they are large enough to cross the lens at close range. The PD-OSENS-WH has no pet immunity setting, so a cat on the back of a sofa can switch a light on at two in the morning. In a home with pets, vacancy mode is the easier choice.

Question 24

Is this the same as the Lutron systems used in high end villas?

Accepted Answer

No. Caseta is Lutron's entry retail range and this sensor is a DIY accessory for it. The systems specified for large Dubai villas are RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks, designed, wired and commissioned by a dealer with a keypad and scene layout agreed in advance. The two ranges do not mix.

Who should not buy this sensor?

Accepted Answer

Anyone without Caseta lighting, because it does nothing on its own. Skip it as well if you need still person detection for a majlis or a home office, if you want one sensor to trigger AC and curtains too, or if you want local warranty support from a Dubai distributor.
