Overview

What it is and where it fits

This is the budget way into presence detection. A 24GHz radar looks for a person rather than for movement, so someone reading on the sofa or praying quietly in a corner still registers as present and the lights stay on. That is the one thing a normal PIR sensor cannot do. Detection runs to about 6 metres and the range is adjustable in the app. A built-in lux sensor reports room brightness across a 0 to 10,000 lux range, so you can write a rule that only switches lights on when the room is both occupied and dim. The device itself is a small puck, just under 50mm across, on a magnetic base that swivels. Power comes over a USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C lead is in the box, so any phone charger, laptop port or USB socket runs it. No wiring, no wall box, no electrician. The part to plan for is the gateway. This is Zigbee 3.0 only, so it needs a MOES or Tuya compatible Zigbee hub before it will join the Smart Life or MOES app, and without one it does nothing at all. Budget for that hub if you do not already own one. Honest positioning: MOES is the value brand next to Aqara and Sonoff, not a premium one. The radar module is OEM sourced. UAE reviews are few and mixed, with reports of the unit dropping offline occasionally and of false triggers in rooms with a ceiling fan running. Buy it for cost, not for polish.

  • Holds lights on for a person sitting still, which PIR sensors get wrong
  • Built-in light sensor, so lights only trigger when the room is actually dark
  • Magnet base sticks to a wall or ceiling, USB powered, zero wiring
  • The cheapest route to radar presence on a Tuya or MOES Zigbee hub

What to check before you order

Fitment does not apply here. This is not a wall switch and not a mains-wired device, so there is no BS1363 Type-G plug, no back box and no neutral wire question. The puck is 49.66mm across and runs off a USB-C cable, so it takes power from any USB charger, laptop, powerbank or USB socket on a 220-240V UAE supply. Nothing needs an electrician and nothing comes off the wall. The magnetic base sticks to a wall or ceiling and tilts 45 degrees, so aim it into the room rather than flat against a gypsum partition, because radar reads through thin stud walls and will report presence in an empty room. Rooms with a ceiling fan running can cause false triggers, so keep the sensor pointed away from the blades and out of the AC vent path. It runs -20 to 60 degrees, fine indoors and in covered outdoor spots, not in direct summer sun. If you want the USB supply hidden in a ceiling void, our electricians run it during first fix.

MOES in the UAE. A value brand in the Tuya and Zigbee ecosystem, sold in the UAE mainly through its own Amazon.ae store with genuine local stock and review history. Best known among smart-home enthusiasts for retrofit modules, no-neutral switches and scene controllers rather than as a household name. Most devices run on the Smart Life or Tuya app, and the Zigbee ones need a MOES or Tuya gateway. Note that MOES rarely states the wall-box pattern on its switch listings, so we confirm back-box fit before fitting one.

Questions about the MOES Zigbee mmWave Human Presence Sensor

What is a mmWave presence sensor and how is it different from a motion sensor?
Chevron down icon
A motion sensor only sees movement, so it calls the room empty the second you stop moving. This uses 24GHz radar to detect a body, including small movements like breathing. A person sitting still on the sofa still counts as present, so automated lights hold instead of dropping out on them.

Do I need a hub or gateway for this sensor?
Chevron down icon
Yes, and it is not optional. The sensor is Zigbee 3.0 only, so it needs a MOES or Tuya compatible Zigbee 3.0 gateway before it can join any app. The Amazon listing title says so, and MOES prints the same note on its own product images. Without a hub it does nothing.

Which gateway should I buy for it?
Chevron down icon
Any MOES Zigbee hub or a generic Tuya compatible Zigbee 3.0 gateway works. One hub carries many sensors, so the cost lands once for the property rather than per device. Owners running Home Assistant have also paired it through zigbee2mqtt, which is the route to take if you prefer local control.

Will it fit my wall box?
Chevron down icon
There is no wall box involved. This is a round puck about 50mm across on a magnetic base, not a switch plate or a socket insert. Nothing is cut into the wall and nothing replaces an existing electrical accessory, so back box sizes and mounting patterns are irrelevant for this product.

Does it work with UAE sockets and 220-240V power?
Chevron down icon
Yes, in the simplest way possible. It draws power over a USB-C cable and MOES includes a USB-A to USB-C lead. Plug that into any USB charger, a laptop, a powerbank or a USB wall socket. The device has no Type-G plug of its own, so the UAE socket question does not arise.

Does it need a neutral wire?
Chevron down icon
No. The neutral wire problem belongs to mains-wired smart switches that replace a wall plate. This sensor is not wired into the lighting circuit at all, it runs on low voltage USB power. Older Dubai apartments with no neutral at the switch box can use this sensor with no wiring changes.

Can I install it myself or do I need an electrician?
Chevron down icon
You can do it yourself in a couple of minutes. Stick the base on a wall or ceiling, plug in the USB cable, then add the sensor in the app through your Zigbee hub. Our team only gets involved if you want the cable buried in the wall or the supply run into a ceiling void.

Which app controls it?
Chevron down icon
Tuya Smart Life or the MOES app, both free. Whichever one your gateway is paired with is the one that carries the sensor. If you already run other Tuya devices in the flat, use Smart Life and keep everything in one app rather than adding a second account and a second login.

Does it work with Alexa and Google Home?
Chevron down icon
Yes, once the gateway is linked. You connect the Tuya or MOES account to Alexa or Google Home, and presence then appears as a sensor you can use in routines. The sensor never talks to Alexa or Google directly, everything passes through the Zigbee hub and the Tuya cloud.

Does it work with Apple Home?
Chevron down icon
Not natively, and this is the main reason to look at Aqara instead. There is no HomeKit or Matter support on this sensor. Some owners bridge it into Apple Home through Home Assistant, but that is a project rather than a setup step. Apple households are better served by the Aqara FP1E or FP2.

How does it compare to the Aqara FP1E?
Chevron down icon
The FP1E is the better sensor and costs roughly three times more. It has a 60GHz radar, cleaner tuning, Apple Home support through an Aqara hub and a far larger review base. The MOES wins on price alone. Pick it when you are covering several rooms cheaply and Apple Home is not part of the plan.

How does it compare to the Aqara FP2 or a Sonoff presence sensor?
Chevron down icon
The FP2 draws separate zones inside one room and runs over WiFi with no hub, which the MOES cannot do at any setting. Sonoff sits between the two on price with a bigger community behind it. MOES is the cheapest entry point, best suited to simple present or absent lighting rules.

What happens if my internet goes down?
Chevron down icon
Local Zigbee traffic between the sensor and the hub keeps running, so a routine stored on the hub can still fire. Anything depending on the Tuya cloud stops until the line comes back, including phone notifications, remote access from outside the house and Alexa or Google voice control.

What happens if the hub fails or gets unplugged?
Chevron down icon
The sensor goes silent. It has no WiFi radio of its own and cannot reach the app without the gateway, so every automation using it stops until the hub is back online. Keep the hub on the same protected socket or UPS as your router if uptime in that room matters to you.

Is it reliable? What do owners actually report?
Chevron down icon
Reviews are thin, 9 ratings averaging 3.6 out of 5, so treat that as low confidence. The useful complaints are specific: one owner says it drops offline about once a week and needs a power cycle, another says it behaves badly in a room with a fan, and a third could not pair it at all.

Will a ceiling fan cause false triggers?
Chevron down icon
It can, and a UAE buyer reported exactly that. Radar sees moving mass, so fan blades or strong air from an AC vent can read as a person. Mount the sensor away from the fan sweep and out of the direct vent path, then test it in an empty room before you trust the automations.

Does it work in an older Dubai apartment?
Chevron down icon
Yes, better than most smart devices do. It needs no rewiring, no neutral, no back box and no landlord approval, only a USB power point and a Zigbee hub. That makes it one of the easier upgrades in an older building where the switch boxes are shallow and the wiring has never been touched.

Can I use it in a bathroom, a store room or outdoors?
Chevron down icon
Store rooms, corridors and covered outdoor areas are fine, and the sensor is rated -20 to 60 degrees. Do not put it in a wet bathroom or in direct sun on an open balcony. No IP rating is published for it, and heat plus moisture will finish it off early in a Dubai summer.

How many of these can I run on one hub?
Chevron down icon
Technically plenty, practically be careful. mmWave sensors report state changes far more often than a battery PIR or a door contact, so each one adds noticeable Zigbee traffic. On jobs with several units we spread them over more than one hub or add a mains-powered Zigbee router to hold the mesh steady.

Where should it be mounted and how high?
Chevron down icon
Wall mounting at roughly 1.5 to 2 metres facing into the room works well, and the base tilts 45 degrees so you can aim it properly. Ceiling mounting gives a cleaner circle of coverage for a corridor or a small store room. Keep it clear of moving curtains, fans and AC vents.

Does it record anything? Is there a privacy issue?
Chevron down icon
No image, no audio, no recording of any kind. Radar reports whether someone is there and how bright the room is, nothing more. That makes it a better fit than a camera for a bedroom or a majlis, where most families would not accept a lens pointed at the seating.

Can it control the AC or a fan, not just lights?
Chevron down icon
Yes, through automations rather than directly. Pair it with a smart IR blaster or a smart switch and you can shut a fan coil down after the room has been empty for fifteen minutes. That is the automation that genuinely takes money off a DEWA bill through a Dubai summer.

Contact us
Can it replace a motion sensor for security?
Chevron down icon
No, this is an automation sensor and not a security device. It reports occupied or empty to your app, with no siren, no camera and no tamper alarm. Use it to run lights, AC or fans. For intrusion detection use door contacts, a proper alarm panel or cameras instead.

What does it cost and how do I buy it through you?
Chevron down icon
It is AED 109 on Amazon.ae, in stock and sold by MOES-HOUSE. The same item sits around AED 305 on noon through a marketplace seller, so Amazon is the honest price. Buy it yourself and we will commission it, or ask us to supply it together with the gateway as one job.

What warranty and support do I get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
Cover comes from the seller, so buying on Amazon.ae gives you their returns window and a local process to use. MOES has no UAE service centre. That is part of the value brand trade-off, and it is why we steer clients towards Aqara for anything they would hate to replace themselves.

Who should not buy this sensor?
Chevron down icon
Anyone on Apple Home, anyone without a Zigbee hub who does not want to buy one, and anyone who wants a device they can fit and forget. If a sensor dropping offline now and then would annoy you, pay more for the Aqara. This one is for cost-driven jobs where a reset is acceptable.
