Overview

What it is and where it fits

Simon iO is the smart mechanism range from Simon, a Spanish electrical manufacturer that has been making wiring accessories since 1916. It is not a switch you buy as one finished item. You pick the decorative range first, either Simon 100 or Simon 270, and a finish from nine options including matt white, champagne, bronze, titanium and matt black. The iO electronics then drop into that frame as the mechanism behind the plate. The result looks like a designer switch, because it is one, and the smart part is invisible. The switches talk over Wi-Fi and mesh directly with each other, so up to 20 iO devices run with no hub at all. Setup and control happen in the free Simon iO app, which also links to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Add the optional Simon Hub Pro iO and you get scenes, schedules, presence simulation and control from outside the house. This suits a villa or apartment fit-out in Dubai where the switch plates are part of the interior design, not an afterthought. It is specified, wired and commissioned by an installer, not bought off a shelf and clipped in over a weekend. The mechanism wires into 230V mains and needs a neutral conductor at the switch box, so a licensed electrician does the work. Honest limits: IP20, indoor and dry locations only, no Apple Home support, and no cross-compatibility with Simon's Smart M7 range. There is no shelf price either. UAE supply runs through a dealer and is quoted per project.

What to check before you order

The voltage question has a clean answer here. Simon's spec sheets put the iO mechanism at 230V, 50Hz with a three-wire line, neutral and load connection, which matches UAE single-phase supply at 220-240V, 50Hz. No transformer, no step-down adapter, nothing to convert. It is a European mechanism though, so it seats in a standard EU-pattern flush wall box behind a Simon 100 or Simon 270 frame, not in the square UK-pattern box most Dubai villas and towers are built with. That is a box change on a retrofit and a specification decision on a new fit-out, so raise it with your contractor early. Type-G versus Schuko only matters for the socket modules in the iO family, not for the switch itself. Installation is mains work: a licensed electrician or certified Simon dealer wires it, and it needs a neutral run to the switch box. Supply in the UAE goes through Stable Link in Dubai Silicon Oasis, Simon's stated exclusive distributor for the UAE and Oman, and is quoted per project.

Simon in the UAE. The Spanish wiring-device maker (Simon S.A., founded 1916) and its Simon Electric China arm. In the UAE and Oman the range is handled by Stable Link in Dubai Silicon Oasis, the stated exclusive distributor, on a project-quote basis rather than through retail shelves. A few manual Simon mechanisms appear on Amazon.ae as cross-border imports, but the smart lines are specified and quoted per job.

Questions about the Simon 100 iO Smart Switch

What exactly is the Simon 100 iO smart switch?
Chevron down icon
It is a smart mechanism made by Simon in Spain that sits behind one of their decorative frames. You choose the Simon 100 or Simon 270 frame and finish, then the iO electronics go in as the working part. The switch you see on the wall is Simon's designer plate. The intelligence is hidden inside it.

Will it work on UAE mains at 220-240V?
Chevron down icon
Yes. Simon rates the iO mechanism at 230V, 50Hz, which sits inside the UAE range of 220-240V at 50Hz. It is a European part, not a US 120V one, so there is no transformer, step-down adapter or voltage converter involved. It wires straight into the circuit like any other mains switch.

Will it fit the wall boxes in my Dubai villa?
Chevron down icon
Check before you order. The iO mechanism and its Simon frame are built for European flush wall boxes. Most Dubai villas and towers are wired with UK-pattern square boxes, so a retrofit often means changing the box behind the plate. On a new fit-out we specify the correct boxes with the contractor at first fix.

Can I fit it myself?
Chevron down icon
No. This is mains electrical equipment, not a plug-in gadget or a battery device. It carries live, neutral and load conductors at 230V and has to go into a compliant wall box. In Dubai that work is for a licensed electrician or a certified Simon dealer, and we handle it as part of the installation.

Do I need a hub to use Simon iO?
Chevron down icon
Not for a small system. Up to 20 iO devices mesh with each other and run on their own, set up through the Simon iO app. Past that number, or if you want stored scenes, schedules and control from outside the house, you add the Simon Hub Pro iO.

What does the Simon Hub Pro iO actually add?
Chevron down icon
Four things: stored scenes, time schedules, presence simulation while you are away, and remote access from outside your own Wi-Fi. It also brings sensors into the system. If you only want local switching and voice control while you are at home, you can leave it out and add it later.

Which app controls it?
Chevron down icon
The free Simon iO app, on Android and iOS. Pairing, naming rooms, grouping circuits and linking voice assistants all happen there. It is Simon's own app, not a generic Tuya or Smart Life shell, so the devices and settings you see match the product range exactly.

Does it work with Alexa and Google Assistant?
Chevron down icon
Yes. You link your Simon iO account to Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant from inside the app, then control lights by voice through an Echo or a Nest speaker. Naming the circuits sensibly during commissioning matters more than people expect, because those names are what you end up saying out loud.

Does it work with Apple Home?
Chevron down icon
Simon lists Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for iO, not Apple Home. If your household runs on iPhones and you want Siri and the Apple Home app controlling the lights, this is the wrong range, and we would point you at a HomeKit or Matter switch instead. Ask us before committing.

Can I retrofit this into an existing villa, or is it only for new builds?
Chevron down icon
Both are possible, but new fit-outs and renovations are the easy case, because the boxes and neutral runs get specified up front. A retrofit depends on what is behind your existing plate: a neutral at the box, and room for a European mechanism. We check that on site before quoting.

Does it need a neutral wire at the switch?
Chevron down icon
Yes. The iO mechanism uses a three-wire connection: line, neutral and load. There is no no-neutral version of this switch. Newer Dubai villas and recent towers usually have a neutral at the box. Older apartment stock often does not, and in those homes this range will not work.

How does it compare to the Aqara Z1 Pro switch you also sell?
Chevron down icon
The Aqara is Zigbee, drops into a UK box, costs a fraction as much and is what we fit in most Dubai villas. Simon iO is a different purchase: Spanish manufacturing, nine metal and painted finishes, and a frame range an interior designer specified. You are paying for the look and the build quality.

Is this the same as the Simon Smart M7 switches I have seen online?
Chevron down icon
No, and they do not work together. The M7 and i7 lines are Simon's Chinese-made smart range, sold as finished switches at retail prices. iO is the Spanish-made mechanism range for the Simon 100 and 270 frames. Different electronics, different app path, no cross-compatibility between the two.

What finishes can I get?
Chevron down icon
Nine across the two frame ranges: white, matt white, copper, aluminium, champagne, gold, titanium, bronze and matt black. You pick the finish and frame first, then the iO module that goes behind it. That split is why the same smart switch can look completely different in two villas.

How do you price it and how long does it take?
Chevron down icon
There is no shelf price for iO in the UAE. We count circuits, confirm the frame range and finish, check the boxes and neutrals, then quote hardware and installation together. Lead time depends on which finishes are in stock with the distributor, so we confirm it in writing with your quote.

What about warranty and support here?
Chevron down icon
Support runs through Simon's manufacturer channel and the local dealer, not a marketplace returns desk. We were not able to verify a published UAE warranty term, so get the coverage confirmed in writing by the distributor or the installing dealer before you commit. We will ask on your behalf during quoting.

Who should not buy this?
Chevron down icon
Anyone who wants a cheap, quick upgrade, anyone in an older apartment with no neutral at the switch box, and anyone whose home runs on Apple Home. Renters should also skip it, because it is wired-in equipment and may need the wall box changed. There are better options for all three cases.

Can I use it in a bathroom or on a terrace?
Chevron down icon
Not directly. The mechanism is IP20, which means indoor and dry locations only, so no splash zones and nothing outdoors. In a Dubai bathroom the usual answer is to put the switch outside the room and the light fitting inside. For terraces and gardens we specify outdoor-rated gear instead.

What lighting load does it handle?
Chevron down icon
The standard two-way iO switch mechanism is rated for LED loads up to 500W, which covers a large majlis or a full villa corridor run of downlights. If you want smooth dimming rather than on and off, you use the iO dimmer module instead, and we check your lamps are actually dimmable.

What else can I add to the same system?
Chevron down icon
The iO family covers two-way and master push switches, dimmers, blind and shutter controls, sockets, thermostats and battery-powered button panels. They all sit in the same frames and the same app, so a bedroom can have lights, curtains and AC on one wall with one look.

Does it keep working when the Wi-Fi drops?
Chevron down icon
The physical switch is wired to the circuit, so pressing it always turns the light on and off. What you lose without a connection is app control, voice commands and anything that runs through the cloud. Remote access from outside the house needs both internet and the Hub Pro iO.

Where does it come from in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
Simon names Stable Link, based in Dubai Silicon Oasis, as its exclusive distributor for the UAE and Oman. Stable Link does not list iO as a stocked, priced shelf item, which fits how the range is sold: specified per project, quoted through a dealer, then delivered for the job.

Will Dubai heat and dust affect it?
Chevron down icon
Inside an air-conditioned villa or apartment, no more than any other wall switch. It is an indoor, dry-location part, so the real risk is not heat but dust and fine sand during construction. We keep the iO modules boxed until second fix, after the plastering and painting are finished.

Can I start with a few switches and grow the system later?
Chevron down icon
Yes, and that is a sensible way to do it. Start with the rooms people actually use, stay under 20 devices and you need no hub at all. Add the Hub Pro iO when you want scenes and remote control, then add dimmers or blind controls as you go.
