Overview

What it is and where it fits

The Z1 Pro is our default wall switch for Dubai villas with a neutral wire at the switch box, and the wrong choice for older apartments without one. It replaces the existing plate on a standard UK wall box, keeps a real physical rocker for anyone who does not want an app, and runs on Zigbee through an Aqara hub. Zigbee matters at villa scale: twenty switches on Zigbee sit on their own mesh and put nothing on your Wi-Fi, and they keep switching lights when the internet drops. Each gang appears separately in Apple Home, Alexa or Google, so a four gang plate in a villa hallway becomes four independent lights rather than one block. The scene function is the part people end up using most, where a long press on a gang runs a whole room rather than one circuit. Match the gang count to the plate you are replacing before ordering: a two gang box will not take a four gang switch, and there is no adapter that makes it fit. Check for the neutral first, then check the gangs.

  • Each gang controls its light independently in the app
  • Physical rocker still works if the internet is down
  • Zigbee mesh keeps twenty switches off your Wi-Fi
  • Long press runs a room scene rather than one circuit

What to check before you order

This switch needs a neutral wire at the box, which newer Dubai villas and recent apartment towers have and a lot of older Deira, Bur Dubai and Satwa apartment stock does not. Take the existing plate off and look before ordering: a bundle of blue or black conductors joined at the back of the box is the neutral, and if there is only a red and a switched conductor you want the H1 no-neutral model instead. The plate is sized for UK wall boxes, which is what UAE villas and apartments are wired with, so it drops into the same aperture. Villa interior walls here are gypsum board with conduit-run cable behind, so the box is usually accessible without breaking blockwork. Gang count must match the plate you are removing.

Questions about the Aqara Z1 Pro Smart Wall Switch

How do I know if my switch box has a neutral wire?
Chevron down icon
Turn off the breaker, unscrew the existing plate and look at the back of the box. A neutral shows up as a bundle of blue or black conductors twisted together in a connector, not going to the switch itself. If all you see is a live conductor and one going out to the light per gang, there is no neutral and this switch will not work. Send us a photo and we will confirm before you order.

Why Zigbee rather than a Wi-Fi switch?
Chevron down icon
Because of the numbers. A villa with twenty switches on Wi-Fi puts twenty devices on your router, and cheap access points start dropping them. Zigbee builds its own mesh where every mains powered switch repeats the signal, so coverage improves as you add switches instead of degrading. Zigbee also keeps working when the internet is out. The cost of that is a hub, which is one purchase for the whole house.

Do I need one switch per light or per plate?
Chevron down icon
Per plate. Count the rockers on the plate you are replacing and order that gang count. A three rocker plate in a villa corridor needs a matching multi gang switch, and each of those rockers then appears as its own light in the app. A four gang switch cannot be fitted into a two gang box.

Does it still work if my Wi-Fi goes down?

The physical rocker always works, wired straight to the light. With the hub on site, Zigbee automations and scenes also keep running locally without internet. What you lose while the connection is down is remote control from outside the house and voice assistants that route through the cloud.

We supply this as part of a working system rather than as a box. That means checking it suits your property first, fitting it properly, setting up the automations that make it useful, and showing your household how it works.
