Overview

What it is and where it fits

The Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) is a small smart display with a 5.5-inch touchscreen and Alexa built in. You talk to it, and it answers, shows the weather, plays music, sets timers, and shows video from other Echo Show units in your home. The 2023 model has a bigger full-range speaker than the older version, so music and voice sound fuller. It works over your home Wi-Fi and connects to phones and speakers by Bluetooth. There is also a built-in Matter controller, so it can control Matter smart lights, plugs, locks, and cameras directly, plus anything you add through Alexa routines. You set it up with the free Alexa app on iPhone or Android. For Dubai homes, the size suits an apartment nightstand or a kitchen shelf in a villa. Renters like it because nothing is drilled or wired in, you just plug it in and take it with you when you move. Alexa here understands English and Khaleeji Arabic, reads the Quran, sets prayer-time reminders, and shows Hijri dates, which many families use daily. Honest limits: there is no battery, so it must stay plugged in. The 2MP camera is fine for quick video calls but not sharp. It has no Zigbee radio, so older Zigbee-only sensors need a separate hub. If you want a screen big enough to watch shows across a room, the Echo Show 8 fits better.

  • 5.5-inch touchscreen and Alexa in one small unit that fits a nightstand or kitchen shelf.
  • Built-in Matter controller and Alexa routines run smart lights, plugs, and locks directly.
  • Bigger 2023 speaker gives clearer voice and deeper bass than the older model.
  • Understands Khaleeji Arabic, reads the Quran, and shows prayer times and Hijri dates.

What to check before you order

The Echo Show 5 runs on a 22W adapter, and the box includes one with a UK-style Type-G plug that matches UAE wall sockets, so no travel adapter is needed. It has no battery, so keep it near a socket. In summer, sit it away from direct window sun and off the top of a warm router, since heat is hard on any small electronics. Dust builds up fast in Dubai, so wipe the screen and speaker grille now and then. In a villa, one unit covers the room it sits in, and Wi-Fi reach matters more than the device itself, so a weak signal at the far end of a large villa may need a mesh point nearby. Alexa supports English and Khaleeji Arabic for prayer times, Quran, and Hijri dates. Stock is mostly Charcoal here. Buy from us and you get the manufacturer warranty plus the UAE retailer one-year cover, with local support if anything goes wrong.

Questions about the Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen)

What is the Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen)?
Chevron down icon
It is a small smart display with a 5.5-inch touchscreen and Alexa built in. You ask it questions out loud and it answers on screen and by voice. It plays music, shows the time and weather, runs timers, makes video calls, and controls smart-home devices.

Is it a good fit for a Dubai apartment?
Chevron down icon
Yes. The small size suits a nightstand, a study desk, or a kitchen counter where a bigger screen would get in the way. Nothing is drilled or wired in, so it is easy for tenants. You just plug it into a nearby socket and set it up on your Wi-Fi.

Will it work in a large villa?
Chevron down icon
It works anywhere your Wi-Fi reaches. One unit covers the room it sits in. In a big villa the limit is usually Wi-Fi, not the device, so if the signal is weak at the far end you may want a mesh point near it. Many families put one in each main room.

Do I need Wi-Fi to use it?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It needs home Wi-Fi for setup and for most features, including Alexa answers, music, and smart-home control. It connects to dual-band Wi-Fi. Without internet it can only do a few basic things like show the clock, so a steady connection matters.

Do I need a separate smart-home hub?
Chevron down icon
Not for most setups. It has a built-in Matter controller and works with Alexa-compatible devices over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so it can control many lights, plugs, and locks on its own. Older Zigbee-only sensors are the exception, since this model has no Zigbee radio.

Is there a monthly subscription?
Chevron down icon
No. The core features work for free once it is set up. Alexa, timers, weather, video calls to other Echo devices, and smart-home control cost nothing extra. Some music and video apps have their own paid plans, but that is optional and up to you.

Which app do I use to set it up?
Chevron down icon
The free Amazon Alexa app on iPhone or Android. You sign in with an Amazon account, connect the device to your Wi-Fi, and follow the steps. You can also finish setup through a web browser. The whole thing usually takes a few minutes.

What can Alexa do on it?
Chevron down icon
Alexa answers questions, plays music and radio, sets alarms and timers, reads the news, and controls smart-home devices by voice. On the screen you also see photos, video calls, recipes, and camera feeds. You can build routines, like turning off the lights and AC with one phrase.

Does it work with Google Assistant or Google Home?
Chevron down icon
No. It runs Alexa only, not Google Assistant. If your smart-home devices are already tied to Google Home, check that they also support Alexa or Matter before you buy. Many popular brands support both, so this is worth a quick check first.

Does it work with Apple HomeKit or Apple Home?
Chevron down icon
Not directly. The Echo Show 5 does not act as a HomeKit hub. If a device supports Matter, both Apple Home and the Echo Show can control it separately. But you cannot manage your HomeKit scenes from this screen, so heavy Apple Home users should keep that in mind.

Does it support Matter devices?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It has a built-in Matter controller, so you can add Matter-certified lights, plugs, and other gear straight through the Alexa app and control them here. Matter is the shared standard many brands now support, which makes adding new devices simpler over time.

Does it have Zigbee?
Chevron down icon
No. Unlike some larger Echo models, the Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) has no Zigbee radio. It uses Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE Mesh, and Matter. If you own Zigbee-only sensors or bulbs, you will need a separate Zigbee hub to bring them in.

How does it handle UAE summer heat?
Chevron down icon
Kept indoors in normal room cooling, it is fine. Like any small electronics, it does not like direct sun through a window or sitting on top of a warm router or set-top box. Give it a little air around it and it will run without trouble through summer.

Does Dubai dust affect it?
Chevron down icon
Dust settles on the screen and speaker over time, which is normal here. Wipe the screen with a soft dry cloth and clear the speaker grille now and then. There are no fans pulling dust inside, so cleaning is just about keeping the surface and sound clear.

What plug does it use, and does it fit UAE sockets?
Chevron down icon
It comes with a 22W adapter and a 1.5m cable. The plug is the UK-style three-pin Type-G that UAE wall sockets use, so it fits straight in with no travel adapter. It runs on standard 220 to 240V mains power.

Does it have a battery, and can I move it around?
Chevron down icon
There is no battery. It must stay plugged in to work. You can unplug it and move it to another room, then plug it back in, but it will not run on its own power. For a bedside or kitchen unit that stays put, this is not an issue.

How much power does it use and what does it cost to run?
Chevron down icon
Very little. It draws only a few watts most of the time and peaks around 22W. Left on all day, it adds a tiny amount to your DEWA bill, similar to a phone charger or a small night light. Running cost is not something to worry about.

Who installs it, and is setup hard?
Chevron down icon
There is no installation. You plug it in and set it up yourself in the Alexa app in a few minutes. If you would rather not, our team can set it up for you, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and link your smart-home devices when we deliver.

Can I make video calls on it?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It has a 2MP camera for video calls to contacts and to other Echo Show devices in your home. The Drop In feature works like a home intercom between rooms. The camera is fine for quick calls, though it is not as sharp as a phone camera.

Does it support Arabic and prayer times?
Chevron down icon
Yes. Alexa on this unit supports English and Khaleeji Arabic. It can read the Quran, set prayer-time reminders, and show Hijri dates. Many families in the UAE keep one in the bedroom or majlis for exactly this, alongside the usual alarms and music.

Can I turn off the camera and microphone for privacy?
Chevron down icon
Yes. There is a physical button that switches off the microphone and camera together, and a built-in cover that slides across the lens. When the cover is on and the mic is off, the device cannot see or hear you, which many buyers like.

What warranty do I get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
It comes with the manufacturer's limited warranty, and UAE retailers such as Sharaf DG add a one-year retailer warranty. Buy through us and we help with setup and any warranty claim locally, so you are not dealing with support overseas if something goes wrong.

How much does it cost and how do I buy from you?

How does it compare to the Echo Show 8?
Chevron down icon
The Echo Show 8 has a bigger 8-inch screen and louder stereo sound, better for watching video or filling a larger room. The Echo Show 5 is smaller and cheaper, better for a bedside or a tight counter. Pick the 5 for a personal spot, the 8 for a shared room.

Who should not buy the Echo Show 5?
Chevron down icon
If you want a screen big enough to watch shows from across a living room, or room-filling stereo sound, look at the Echo Show 8 instead. If your home runs on Google or Apple voice control, or you rely on Zigbee-only devices, this model may not suit you.
