What is the Aqara Smart Lock D200i?

It is Aqara's flagship smart lock for wooden entry doors. It opens by 3D face recognition, Apple Home Key, PIN, NFC card, the app, Siri or a backup key, and its push-pull latch locks the door automatically when it shuts. It is a higher-end model than the Aqara D100 we also list.

Will it fit my villa main door?

It fits wooden doors between 40 and 120mm thick, which covers most villa main doors and many apartment entrance doors in Dubai. Measure the thickness of the door leaf and the width of the stile before ordering. If you have a glass, uPVC or narrow-frame door, this is the wrong lock and we can suggest another.

Can I fit it on an apartment door?

Accepted Answer

Often yes, if the entrance door is wooden and within the thickness range. The bigger question in an apartment is permission. Many buildings and landlords have rules about changing the entrance door hardware, so check your tenancy contract and with building management before you drill anything.

Can a tenant use it, and will the landlord allow it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, tenants fit these all the time, but get written permission first. Fitting means drilling the door, so a landlord has a fair say. A common arrangement is to fit the lock, keep the original cylinder, and refit the old handle when you move out. Ask us and we will keep the removed parts labelled for you.

Who installs it and how long does it take?

We do. Our team measures the door, fits the lock, sets up face, PIN and Home Key, and shows the household how it works. A straightforward wooden door takes about an hour or two. You can self-fit with the included kit if you are handy, but a misaligned strike is the usual cause of a lock that grinds or fails to latch.

Does it need Wi-Fi or an Aqara hub?

The lock runs on its own over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so face, PIN, card and key all work with no hub. You only need an Aqara hub if you want Zigbee automations, like linking the door to lights or sensors. Wi-Fi is what lets you check the log or unlock from your phone when you are away.

Does it work with Apple Home, Google and Alexa?

Does face unlock still work reliably in Dubai summer heat?

Face recognition is a real advantage in Dubai summers. Fingerprint readers struggle with sweaty or damp fingers, while the 3D face module reads a map of your face in under a second and does not mind the heat. Keep the lock on a shaded door, as constant direct sun is hard on any electronics and the battery.

Does the D200i have a fingerprint reader?

No. This model uses 3D face recognition instead of a fingerprint sensor, which is unusual for Aqara and is the main reason to pick it. If you specifically want a fingerprint lock, look at the Aqara A100 or D100 in our range, which read fingerprints and cost less.

What is the battery life, and does it work in a power cut?

Aqara rates it at up to four months per charge, though heavy face-unlock use shortens that. It comes with two lithium battery packs, so one charges over USB-C while the other runs the lock. A mains power cut does not affect it at all, since the lock runs on its own batteries, not house power.

What happens if the battery goes flat, and is there a key backup?

You get plenty of warning: the app and the keypad both alert you as the charge drops. If a pack ever goes flat entirely, you swap in the spare, charge the flat one over USB-C, or open the door with the mechanical key that comes in the box. You are never locked out over a dead battery.

Can I give a cleaner or guest access, and are entries logged?

You can give a cleaner or a guest their own PIN or NFC card instead of sharing yours, and set it to work only on certain days or just once. Every entry is logged by user, so you can see who opened the door and when. Delete a code the day an arrangement ends and that access is gone.

Is it secure, and can it be hacked?

The lock uses encrypted connections, tamper and forced-entry alerts, and anti-peep PIN entry that lets you pad the real code with decoy digits. Apple Home Key credentials are stored securely on your device. No lock is unbreakable, but the weak point on any door is usually the frame and hinges, so a solid door and strike matter as much as the lock.

How does the app work, and can several people use the lock?

The Aqara Home app manages users, credentials, logs and settings, and you can add family members with their own access. It holds up to 50 faces, 50 PINs and 25 NFC cards, which is far more than a normal household needs, so everyone gets their own credential rather than sharing one code.

Does it work offline, or does it need internet to open?

Accepted Answer

It works offline. Standing at the door, face, PIN, card and key all open the lock with no internet and no hub. Internet only matters for the remote features: checking the log, getting alerts, or unlocking from your phone while you are out. If your broadband drops, the door still opens normally.

Can I unlock it remotely while I am travelling?

Yes, with Wi-Fi connected you can unlock from the Aqara Home app wherever you are, which is handy for letting in a relative or a delivery when you are away. You also get an alert each time the door is opened. Without Wi-Fi the lock still works at the door, you just lose the remote side.

Is there a camera or video doorbell built in?

No. The D200i is a lock, not a video doorbell. The face module maps your face to recognise you, it is not a camera you watch a feed from and it does not store footage for you. If you want to see and speak to visitors, pair it with a separate video doorbell and we can fit both.

How does it compare to the Yale YDM4109A?

Accepted Answer

The Yale is a proven lock with UAE showrooms, stocked spares and a lock service network behind it. The Aqara adds 3D face recognition and Apple Home Key, which the Yale does not have, and sits in the wider Aqara system. On a main door, weigh the Aqara's features against the Yale's easier after-sales support.

How is it different from the cheaper Aqara D100?

If face unlock and hands-free entry matter to you, the D200i is the upgrade. If not, the D100 saves a good amount.

What does push-pull and auto-lock actually mean?

The latch is motorised. You push or pull the handle to open, and the lock drives the bolt home and locks itself the moment the door shuts, so you never leave it on the latch by mistake. You can set the relock timing in the app if you want a short grace period.

Skip it if your door is glass, metal, uPVC or outside the 40 to 120mm range, or if the entrance sits in full sun and rain. If you run an Alexa home or just want a cheaper fingerprint lock, the Aqara A100 or D100 or the Yale are better fits. Renters without landlord permission should wait until they have it.
