Overview

What it is and where it fits

The Nest Doorbell (Battery, 2nd Gen) is Google's wire-free doorbell, and it suits a home already built around Google or Android. It runs on a rechargeable battery, so it fits an apartment with no chime wiring behind the frame, and you can also connect it to existing doorbell wiring for constant power if a villa has it. The part that sets it apart is the on-device AI. It tells the difference between a person, a delivered parcel, an animal and a vehicle, and it sends those alerts free, with no subscription. Most rivals put that behind a monthly plan. Video is HD with HDR in a tall 3:4 frame, so it shows a caller head to toe and shows a box left on the floor by your door, which the wide doorbells here miss. Night Vision covers the dark. Two-way talk lets you tell a courier where to leave a delivery. You get three hours of free event history stored on the device, and a paid Nest Aware plan adds 24/7 recording, longer history and familiar-face alerts. Setup and daily control run through the Google Home app, and it links to Nest speakers and displays for chime announcements and live view. Two honest limits: it has no native Apple Home or Alexa support, so an Apple or Alexa household should look elsewhere, and it needs a 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi signal that actually reaches the door.

What to check before you order

A battery doorbell suits Dubai apartments, where the door frame usually has no chime transformer, so this sticks or screws to the frame and needs nothing from the building. Heat matters. On a west-facing villa porch that hits the high 40s in July, each charge runs down faster and constant heat is hard on any sealed battery, so mount it under the porch overhang or in a shaded reveal rather than open wall. Fine dust can settle on the lens over a summer, so a quick wipe now and then keeps the picture clean. If a villa already has 8 to 24V chime wiring, wiring the doorbell in gives constant power and skips the recharge. Wi-Fi reach is the other check: the door needs a steady signal, which is easy in a flat but can be weak at a villa's front door far from the router. On support, note that Google does not sell Nest hardware in the UAE directly, so warranty runs through the retailer, not Google in-region.

Google Nest in the UAE. Official UAE retail through Amazon.ae and Sharaf DG, with Arabic language support in the Google Home app.

Questions about the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery, 2nd Gen)

What is the Nest Doorbell (Battery)?
Chevron down icon
It is Google's wire-free video doorbell. It sees who is at your door, records short clips, and lets you talk to callers from your phone. It runs on a rechargeable battery, so it fits doors with no wiring, and you can also wire it to an existing chime for constant power.

Is it right for my apartment?
Chevron down icon
Yes, and it is a natural fit. Most Dubai apartments have no doorbell wiring behind the frame, and the battery model needs none. It sticks or screws to the frame and connects over Wi-Fi. Just point it at your own doorway rather than down the shared corridor, and check your building's rules on cameras first.

Is it right for my villa?
Chevron down icon
Yes. On a villa you can run it on battery or wire it to the front door's existing 8 to 24V chime for constant power. The main thing to check is Wi-Fi at the door. A villa entrance can sit far from the router, so a weak signal there is the usual reason a doorbell drops out.

Does it need Wi-Fi?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It connects to your home Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz or 5GHz and needs a steady signal at the door to send alerts and stream video. If your router is deep inside a villa, the front door may be at the edge of coverage, and a mesh point or extender near the entrance fixes that.

Does it need a hub or bridge?
Chevron down icon
No. It talks straight to your Wi-Fi and the Google Home app, so there is no separate base station to buy. A Nest speaker or display is optional and only adds a chime sound and live view on screen, but nothing about the doorbell needs one to work.

Do I have to pay a monthly subscription?
Chevron down icon
No, not for the core features. It sends free alerts for people, parcels, animals and vehicles and keeps three hours of event clips on the device with no plan. A paid Nest Aware plan is optional and adds 24/7 recording, longer history and familiar-face alerts, but the doorbell is useful without it.

Which app controls it?
Chevron down icon
The Google Home app, on Android or iPhone. You set it up there and use it there for live view, alerts, two-way talk and settings. If you still use the older Nest app, Google has moved doorbell features into Google Home, so that is the one to install.

Does it work with Alexa?
Chevron down icon
No, not natively. This doorbell is built for Google's system and does not link to Amazon Alexa the way it links to Nest speakers and displays. If your home runs on Alexa and you want the doorbell to announce on your Echo, look at a Ring or eufy model instead.

Does it work with Apple Home or HomeKit?
Chevron down icon
No. There is no native Apple Home support, so it will not appear in the Apple Home app or record to HomeKit Secure Video. An Apple household that wants the doorbell inside the Home app should look at the Aqara G4, which is built for that.

Does it work with Google Assistant?
Chevron down icon
Yes, that is its home ground. You can ask a Nest speaker or display to show the front door, and the doorbell announces callers on those devices. Newer Google Home features and Gemini-based alerts also run on this hardware through the Google Home app.

Will it show a parcel left on the floor?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It uses a tall 3:4 frame that shows a caller head to toe and includes the ground right at your door, so a box left by the threshold stays in shot. It also labels a delivery specifically, so a parcel alert is not lost among general motion notifications.

How good is the video quality?
Chevron down icon
Video is HD at 960 by 1280 with HDR, so faces stay clear even with bright sky behind a caller, which is common on a sunny Dubai porch. At night, infrared Night Vision keeps the picture usable in the dark. The 145 degree diagonal view is wide enough to see the whole doorway.

How does it handle Dubai heat?
Chevron down icon
It works in the heat, but heat is hard on any battery. On an exposed west-facing porch that reaches the high 40s in summer, each charge drains faster and constant sun shortens battery life over time. Mount it in shade, under the porch overhang or in a recessed reveal, rather than on open sunlit wall.

Will dust affect it?
Chevron down icon
Fine dust is more a cleaning job than a fault. Over a Dubai summer a film can build on the lens and soften the picture or trigger odd motion alerts. A quick wipe with a soft cloth every few weeks keeps it clear. Keeping it under cover also reduces how much dust reaches the lens.

How is it powered, and does it use a Type-G plug?
Chevron down icon
It runs on an internal rechargeable battery. To charge, you unclip the unit and plug the supplied cable into a USB power adapter at any UAE Type-G socket, then refit it. If your villa has existing doorbell chime wiring, you can wire it in instead for constant power and skip the recharging.

How often do I recharge the battery?
Chevron down icon
It depends on how busy your door is and how hot the mounting spot gets. In normal use expect to recharge every couple of months, and more often on a hot, busy entrance. Each charge takes a few hours. If that upkeep annoys you, wiring it to a villa chime removes it entirely.

Who installs it, and can I do it myself?
Chevron down icon
On a flat or a light wall, most people fit it themselves. The box includes a mount, a wedge, screws, anchors and a security tool. Wiring it to a villa chime, drilling into hard stone, or fixing weak Wi-Fi at the door is where our team helps, and we set it up in the Google Home app for you.

Is there a chime inside the house?
Chevron down icon
Not in the box. Alerts arrive on your phone, and if you own a Google Nest speaker or display the doorbell can chime and announce callers on it. If you want a sound that carries through the house without a phone, plan to add a compatible Nest-friendly speaker as your chime.

Does it record neighbours in an apartment corridor?
Chevron down icon
It can, and that matters here. In an apartment the door faces a shared corridor, so the camera will catch neighbours passing. UAE privacy rules take recording other people seriously and your building may have its own policy, so ask building management first and angle the view down onto your own doorway.

What is the warranty and support like in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
This is the honest catch. Google does not sell Nest hardware in the UAE directly, and the UAE listings come through a marketplace reseller, so official Google in-region warranty is not guaranteed. In practice you rely on the retailer's return and replacement window, for example Amazon.ae's 15-day return policy. Keep your invoice.

Is it genuine, or a grey import?
Chevron down icon
The units on the UAE listings are genuine Google retail hardware, brought in by a reseller rather than sold by Google locally. They work normally and update over Wi-Fi like any Nest device. The trade-off is support: there is no local Google warranty desk, so returns go through the retailer you bought from.

How much is it and how do I buy through you?
Chevron down icon
The device is around AED 409 on Amazon.ae at the last check, and prices move, so confirm on the day. We supply and fit it as part of a smart-home job, quoted after a quick look at your door, Wi-Fi and, for a villa, any chime wiring. Message us on WhatsApp for a current price and a visit.

How does it compare to the Ring Battery doorbell?
Chevron down icon
Both are battery doorbells with a tall, parcel-friendly view. The big difference is running cost: Nest gives free people, parcel and vehicle alerts with no plan, while Ring puts most saved recording behind a Ring Protect subscription. Ring works with Alexa, Nest works with Google. Pick the one that matches your speakers.

Who should not buy this doorbell?
Chevron down icon
Skip it if your home runs on Apple Home or Alexa, because it links to neither. Skip it too if you want a local warranty desk in the UAE, since support here goes through the reseller. And if you refuse to ever recharge a battery and have no chime wiring to hardwire it, a mains doorbell suits you better.
