Overview

What it is and where it fits

This is the strip we specify when the cove lighting is part of the interior rather than an afterthought. Colour accuracy and low-end dimming are where it separates from the budget strips: a Hue strip at ten percent still holds a clean warm white, where a cheap strip at ten percent goes green or starts stepping visibly. In a majlis cove or a gypsum ceiling detail that difference is the whole point of doing it. It is cuttable and extendable, runs on Zigbee through the Hue Bridge alongside the bulbs, and joins the same scenes, so a media room scene can dim the ceiling, colour the cove and sync the strip to the film in one action. It needs a power supply at the strip, which is easy in a fit-out with the cove open and awkward once the gypsum is closed and painted. Budget for the driver location at design stage rather than after. If the strip is going behind a television as accent lighting rather than into architecture, the Govee strip does that job for a quarter of the money.

  • Clean warm white at low brightness where cheap strips shift colour
  • Cut and extend to the length of the cove
  • Joins the same scenes as Hue bulbs on one Bridge
  • Syncs to film and music in a media room

What to check before you order

Gypsum ceiling coves and dropped ceiling details are standard in Dubai villa and apartment interiors, which is exactly what this strip is for. Plan the driver position while the cove is open, because retrofitting a power supply into a closed and painted gypsum detail means cutting and making good. Officially distributed here by Signify, so warranty is local. For accent lighting behind a television or under a kitchen counter, where nobody is judging the colour at five percent brightness, the Govee strip is the honest recommendation instead of this one.

Philips Hue in the UAE. Officially distributed by Signify through Sharaf DG, Virgin Megastore and Gulf Electronics. E27 fittings match UAE fixtures.

Questions about the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus

Is Hue worth four times the price of a Govee strip?
Chevron down icon
In architectural cove lighting, yes, because the difference shows at low brightness where a cheap strip shifts colour and steps as it dims. Behind a television or under a counter, no. Match the spend to whether anyone will be looking at the quality of the light or just at the effect.

Can it be cut to fit my cove?
Chevron down icon
Yes, it cuts at marked points and extends with additional sections, so it can be sized to the run. Measure the full cove including returns before ordering, since joining several extensions is neater than trying to stretch one strip.

Does it need power at the strip?
Chevron down icon
Yes, a mains driver has to sit within reach of the strip. In a fit-out that is a trivial addition while the ceiling is open. In a finished home it means opening part of the gypsum, which is the main cost driver on a retrofit and why we look at the cove before quoting.
