Overview

What it is and where it fits

Pick the M1S Gen 2 when you want the hub to make a noise. It is a Zigbee hub with a built-in speaker and a siren, which means a door sensor left open, a water leak under the kitchen sink or a motion trigger while the house is armed produces an audible alert without a separate alarm panel. It plugs directly into a wall socket with no cable, so it can go in a hallway at the centre of the floor rather than on a shelf near the TV. As a Zigbee radio it does the same job as the rest of the range: it carries Aqara sensors, switches and curtain motors, runs automations locally so schedules survive an internet drop, and bridges into Apple Home, Alexa and Google. What it does not have is ethernet or infrared, which is the line between this and the M2. If the priority is a villa rack and split AC control, that is the M2. If the priority is a chime and a voice prompt on the same box that runs the sensors, this is the one, and it is the cheapest way to get an alarm sound into an Aqara system.

  • Siren and speaker built in, so it doubles as the alarm chime
  • Plugs straight into a socket with no trailing cable
  • Announces leaks and open doors out loud, not just on a phone
  • Carries the full Aqara sensor and switch range over Zigbee

What to check before you order

In a Dubai villa the practical use is leak detection. A water sensor under a kitchen sink or beside a water heater is only useful if somebody hears it, and this hub is what turns that sensor into a noise in the hallway. Plug it into a socket in a central corridor rather than a bedroom, since a siren behind a closed door is wasted. It runs on Wi-Fi with no ethernet fallback, so in a large villa with a rack and a patchy mesh, the M2 is the better foundation and this can sit alongside it purely as a chime. One hub is the primary for the property, and any second hub is there for coverage or sound, not for a second app.

Questions about the Aqara Hub M1S Gen 2

Is this a real alarm system?

No, and it should not be sold as one. It is a hub with a siren: it makes noise when a sensor triggers and it sends a notification to your phone. There is no monitoring centre, no tamper-proof panel and no SIRA-approved reporting. For a villa that needs a monitored system, this sits alongside one, not instead of it.

M1S Gen 2 or M2?
Chevron down icon
M2 if the house is a villa with a network rack, because ethernet and infrared matter more there than a siren. M1S Gen 2 if the house is an apartment and you want audible leak and door alerts on the same device that runs the sensors. Plenty of villas run both: M2 in the rack, M1S upstairs for coverage and sound.

Does it work without internet?

Automations stored on the hub keep running, so a motion-triggered light or a leak siren still fires when the connection drops. What you lose is remote control from outside the house and voice assistants, since those route through the cloud.

Fitted and configured by our Dubai team

We supply this as part of a working system rather than as a box. That means checking it suits your property first, fitting it properly, setting up the automations that make it useful, and showing your household how it works.
