What it is and where it fits

The M2 is the Aqara hub to buy for a villa, and the reason is the two ports the cheaper models lack. It takes ethernet, so it sits in the network rack on a wired backhaul instead of fighting for space on a congested 2.4GHz band, and it has a 360 degree infrared emitter, so the same hub that runs your Zigbee sensors also drives split AC units, the TV and anything else with a remote. Zigbee capacity is up to 128 child devices, which is the number that actually covers a four or five bedroom villa once sensors, switches, curtain motors and locks are counted. Automations run locally on the hub, so lighting scenes, curtain schedules and AC timers keep working through an internet outage. It also carries a small speaker for alerts and doorbell chimes. Being honest about the trade-off: it is a Zigbee and infrared hub, not a Matter controller in the way the newer models are, so cross-brand Matter work may still want a second device. As the foundation of an Aqara villa install, this is the one that is still right three years later, which is the only test that matters for a hub.

What to check before you order

This is the standard Aqara foundation for a Dubai villa. Put it in the rack or the SMATV cupboard on a wired connection, and if that cupboard is metal-lined or tucked into a corner, run a short patch lead and mount the hub outside it so the Zigbee radio is not shielded. The infrared side is the part clients underestimate: most villas here have three to six split AC units on separate handsets, and one M2 with line of sight to a unit brings that AC into schedules and scenes without touching the wiring. Line of sight is the catch, so one hub cannot cover ACs in different rooms and additional infrared bridges are the usual answer. One M2 is the primary hub for the property. Add more Aqara hubs only to extend Zigbee coverage, not to create second systems.

Questions about the Aqara Hub M2

Why does ethernet matter for a hub?

Because a hub is the single point everything else depends on. In a villa with a mesh network, a Wi-Fi hub can roam to a weaker node, drop off during a firmware update or suffer from a crowded 2.4GHz band shared with every neighbour. A wired hub does none of that. If your rack has a spare port, use it.

Can it really control my split AC?

Yes, within line of sight. The M2 learns the AC remote and then treats the unit as a device you can schedule or add to scenes, for example cooling the majlis before guests arrive. It sends infrared exactly like the handset does, so it cannot read the AC's current state if someone uses the original remote, and it cannot control an AC in another room through a wall.

How many devices can it handle in a villa?

Up to 128 Zigbee children, and mains-powered Zigbee devices such as wall switches act as repeaters, so the mesh gets stronger as you add them. That is the practical difference from Wi-Fi devices, where every new item is another client on the router rather than another relay.

Do I need one hub per floor?

Usually not. One M2 plus a few mains-powered Zigbee devices spread across the villa normally covers three floors, because each of those devices extends the mesh. A second hub is worth adding only where a detached annexe or a heavily walled basement leaves a genuine dead zone.
