Overview

What it is and where it fits

Be clear about what this is before buying it. The V1 is a wall-mounted control panel that goes into a standard switch back box and gives you a touchscreen for scenes, lighting, curtains and climate. It is not a hub in the sense the M2 is: it is the interface layer that sits on top of a system, and the system underneath still needs its own hub to carry the Zigbee devices. Where it earns its price is in rooms where phones are the wrong tool. A majlis, a master bedroom or an entrance is used by guests, by children and by staff who will not be added to a home app, and a panel on the wall means one touch for an evening scene rather than an explanation. Replacing an existing switch also means the wall keeps working the way a wall is supposed to. In a Dubai villa the deciding factor is usually the back box: panels need depth and a neutral wire, and both need checking before anything is ordered. Specify it for two or three key rooms, not for every switch position in the house, where the cost adds up fast for little gain.

  • Wall control for guests and staff who are not on the home app
  • One touch for a whole scene instead of several app taps
  • Goes into an existing switch position, no new wall plate design
  • Keeps the room usable when phones are not to hand

What to check before you order

Two site checks decide whether this can be fitted in a Dubai home. First, back box depth: many villas here use shallow boxes that a display panel will not sit into, and deepening one means opening the wall. Second, the neutral wire, which is present in most newer villa wiring and missing in a fair number of older apartments. Both are answered by taking one switch plate off during the site visit. It is worth fitting in a majlis and at the main entrance, because those are the rooms guests use, and it removes any need to hand over an app. It does not replace your hub. Aqara devices still pair to an M2 or M100, and the panel is the screen in front of that system.

Aqara in the UAE. Sold through several authorised UAE resellers rather than one exclusive distributor. Wide local stock and the broadest single-hub ecosystem available in UAE retail.

Questions about the Aqara V1 Display Switch

Does the V1 replace my hub?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about it. Your Zigbee sensors, curtain motors and switches still pair to a hub such as the M2 or M100. The V1 is the wall interface to that system. Buying a panel and no hub leaves you with a screen and nothing behind it.

Will it fit my wall box?

It needs a standard switch back box with enough depth and a neutral wire. Villa wiring in Dubai usually has the neutral, and older apartments often do not. Depth is the more common blocker. We take a switch plate off during the site visit and confirm before anything is ordered.

Where is it actually worth putting one?

The entrance, the majlis and the master bedroom. Those are the positions where somebody who is not on the home app needs to change the lights or the curtains. Fitting a panel at every switch position in a villa costs a great deal and adds very little over a normal smart switch.
