Overview

What it is and where it fits

The Homey Bridge is the low-cost entry to the Homey platform, and the one decision it forces is the important one. It has the radios: Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Matter, infrared and 433MHz, which is a wider set than anything else at this price, and it is what lets a home that has accumulated devices from several brands run them from one app. What it does not have is local processing. All the automation logic lives in Homey's cloud, so the Bridge is a radio relay: when the internet goes down, so do your rules. Homey Pro is the same platform with the logic running on the box in your hallway. That gap is the entire decision between the two. For an apartment where the automations are conveniences rather than infrastructure, and where a few hours without them is an annoyance and nothing more, the Bridge is fine and it is a fraction of the price. For a villa where lighting scenes, curtain schedules and AC timing are how the house actually operates, buying the Bridge is a false economy that gets discovered on the first bad day with the connection.

  • Six radios in one box, so several brands run from one app
  • Cheapest route into the Homey platform
  • Handles older 433MHz gear alongside Zigbee and Matter
  • Suits an apartment where automations are convenience rather than infrastructure

What to check before you order

Internet reliability is the deciding factor here, and in Dubai it is not a theoretical concern. Home connections drop for a few hours often enough that a household notices, and with the Bridge every rule stops for the duration: curtains stay where they are, lighting scenes do not fire, AC schedules do not run. In an apartment where somebody is home to flip a switch, that is tolerable. In a villa left on schedules while the family travels for the summer, it is not, and Homey Pro is the version to specify. There is no ethernet port on the Bridge either, so it also cannot sit on the wired backhaul that a villa rack makes available.

Questions about the Homey Bridge

What is the real difference between Bridge and Pro?
Chevron down icon
Where the thinking happens. The Bridge relays radio traffic to Homey's cloud and the cloud decides what to do. The Pro runs the same logic on the device in your house. In practice that means Pro automations survive an internet outage and Bridge automations do not. Everything else, including the radio support, is broadly similar.

Why would I choose Homey over an Aqara or SwitchBot hub?
Chevron down icon
Because you already own devices from several ecosystems. Homey speaks Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Matter, infrared and 433MHz at once, which lets a mixed house run from a single app instead of four. If everything you own is one brand, that brand's own hub is cheaper and simpler.

Can I start with a Bridge and upgrade later?

Yes, and it is a reasonable way to try the platform. Be realistic about the cost though: the Pro is several times the price, so a household certain it needs local automation is better off buying it once rather than paying for both.

We supply this as part of a working system rather than as a box. That means checking it suits your property first, fitting it properly, setting up the automations that make it useful, and showing your household how it works.
