Overview

What it is and where it fits

The BroadLink RM4 Mini is a small, cheap Wi-Fi infrared blaster, and for a Dubai bedroom or studio with one wall-mounted split and a TV it is the lowest-cost way to get app, timer and Alexa control. It is infrared only, so it has no radio for curtain motors. That is the main difference from the RM4 Pro. The Mini sits on a shelf or dresser, sends infrared in all directions up to about 8 metres, and copies your AC remote from BroadLink's cloud library or by learning its buttons. Any split with an infrared handheld remote works. It cannot control chilled-water fan coil units run by wired wall thermostats, which most district-cooled tower apartments have, or ducted and VRF systems on wired controllers. There is no sensor inside and no power adapter in the box. Buy the RM4 mini S set with the HTS2 USB cable if you want the AC to switch on when a room passes a set temperature. Compared with the Sensibo Air or tado, it costs a fraction of the price and also runs your TV. Its AC control is basic, though. It sends commands without knowing whether they worked, has no smart comfort mode and no native Apple Home. It is a good fit for maid's rooms, kids' rooms, holiday lets and tenants on a tight budget. For a master bedroom where steady overnight comfort matters, a Sensibo is the better tool.

  • Puts a split AC and TV on your phone for under AED 100
  • Alexa and Google voice control for the AC
  • Optional sensor cable switches the AC on by room temperature
  • Tiny, no wiring, and moves with you when the tenancy ends

What to check before you order

The RM4 Mini suits rooms with a wall-mounted split and a handheld infrared remote, which covers most villa bedrooms, maid's rooms and older apartments. If your apartment has a wired wall thermostat and chilled water from Empower or Emicool, the fan coil has no infrared receiver, and this will not control it. Ducted and VRF units on wired panels are the same. The box has only a USB cable, so plug it into any UK 5V 1A USB charger. BroadLink rates it to 50°C, so keep it inside, not on a sunny sill. Infrared does not pass through walls, so each room needs its own unit. Because commands are one-way, a family using the normal remote will leave the app out of step. For holiday homes it is a cheap way to switch off ACs left running between guests.

BroadLink in the UAE. Chinese maker of Wi-Fi infrared and RF remote hubs that control split ACs, TVs and other remote-controlled devices from an app or voice assistant. Sold in the UAE through BroadLink's own seller on Amazon.ae. The hubs ship without a power adapter, so any UK 5V USB charger is needed.

Questions about the BroadLink RM4 Mini Universal IR Remote

What is the BroadLink RM4 Mini?
Chevron down icon
It is a small Wi-Fi infrared blaster. It learns or looks up the remotes for your AC, TV, set-top box, fan or soundbar, then lets you control them from the BroadLink app, timers, Alexa or Google. It is infrared only and suits a single room.

How much is the RM4 Mini in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
BroadLink's UAE seller lists it at AED 79 on Amazon.ae with fast delivery, and AED 99 for the RM4 mini S set that adds the HTS2 temperature and humidity cable. Some marketplace sellers ask over AED 150 for the same unit, which is not worth paying.

Will it control my split AC?
Chevron down icon
Yes, if the AC uses an infrared handheld remote, which covers Daikin, LG, Gree, Midea, O'General, Samsung and most wall splits. Choose your brand in the app or teach it your remote's buttons. It needs line of sight or a good bounce within about 8 metres.

Does it work with chilled-water fan coil units?
Chevron down icon
No. Most Dubai towers on district cooling use fan coil units controlled by a wired wall thermostat, with no infrared receiver. The RM4 Mini only sends infrared, so it has nothing to control. Those apartments need a smart fan coil thermostat, which we can recommend and fit.

Can it control ducted or VRF AC?
Chevron down icon
Only if the ducted unit uses an infrared handheld remote with a receiver, which is uncommon. Ducted and VRF systems in Dubai villas usually run from wired wall controllers that infrared cannot reach. Those need the AC maker's Wi-Fi adapter or a gateway instead.

What is the difference between the RM4 Mini and RM4 Pro?
Chevron down icon
The RM4 Pro adds 433MHz radio for fixed-code curtain motors, RF fans and switches, and has a wider body. The Mini is infrared only, smaller and about half the price. For a bedroom with just an AC and TV, the Mini is enough.

How is it different from a Sensibo Air?
Chevron down icon
Sensibo Air is a dedicated AC controller with built-in temperature and humidity sensors, Climate React comfort control, Apple Home support and better tracking of the AC's state. The RM4 Mini is a cheap universal remote that also runs the TV. Choose Sensibo for comfort, the Mini for budget.

Does it come with a power adapter?
Chevron down icon
No. BroadLink's spec sheet says there is no adapter in the package, and it works with any 5V USB adapter. Use a UK three-pin USB charger rated at least 1A, such as an old phone charger. A weak or loose charger is the usual cause of dropouts.

Does it have a temperature sensor?
Chevron down icon
No, there is no sensor inside. The HTS2 cable replaces the normal USB cable and reports room temperature and humidity in the BroadLink app. With it you can set triggers, such as turning the AC on when a bedroom passes 26°C. The mini S set includes it.

Which app does it use?
Chevron down icon
The BroadLink app for iPhone and Android, which replaced the older IHC app. You connect the Mini to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, then add each appliance. The app also handles timers, scenes and sharing the remote with family members.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home?
Chevron down icon
Alexa and Google Home yes, through the BroadLink skill and service, including AC and TV voice commands with Alexa. There is no native Apple Home support. Apple users can bridge it through Home Assistant or Homebridge, or choose a Sensibo instead.

Does it need 2.4GHz Wi-Fi?
Chevron down icon
Yes. The RM4 Mini only joins 2.4GHz networks. Most du and e& routers broadcast both bands under one name, which can confuse setup. If it fails, temporarily separate the bands or create a 2.4GHz guest network for smart devices.

What happens in a DEWA power cut?
Chevron down icon
The Mini has no battery, so it switches off and reconnects to Wi-Fi when power returns. Timers stay saved in your account. Infrared is one-way, so after a cut, check the AC with its normal remote or resend the command from the app.

Does it work if the internet goes down?
Chevron down icon
Voice control and app control from outside the home stop, since they run through BroadLink's cloud and Alexa or Google. The handheld remotes keep working. Integrators using Home Assistant can still control the Mini locally over the home network.

Will the app know if someone uses the normal remote?
Chevron down icon
No. The RM4 Mini sends commands but does not track what the handheld remote does, so the app can show the wrong state. In homes where children or staff use the remote, rely on timers and 'off' commands rather than the status shown in the app.

Can one Mini control ACs in two rooms?
Chevron down icon
No. Infrared needs a line of sight and does not pass through walls, so each room needs its own unit. One Mini can run two splits in the same large room if both are within about 8 metres, which is handy in an open majlis.

Can a tenant use it?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It is powered by USB and sits on a shelf, with no wiring and no changes to the AC. There is nothing for a landlord or building management to approve, and at 60 grams it leaves with you when you move.

Is it good for a maid's room or kids' room?
Chevron down icon
It is one of the best value options. You can set the AC to switch off at a set time, cap how cold it runs by sending set commands on a schedule, and turn it off remotely when a room is empty, for about AED 79 plus a USB charger.

How long does setup take, and do you install it?
Chevron down icon
About 15 minutes per room: power it, join Wi-Fi, add the AC and TV, and test. We set up several at once in villas and holiday homes, label them by room, link Alexa or Home Assistant and build simple schedules.

How does it cope with Dubai heat?
Chevron down icon
Fine indoors. BroadLink rates it for 0 to 50°C and up to 85% humidity, and it uses under 0.7 W on standby. Keep it away from sunny windows and out of outdoor majlis areas or balconies, where summer heat passes its rating.

Is it secure?
Chevron down icon
Remote and voice control run through a BroadLink cloud account, so use a strong, unique password and keep the app updated. For a no-cloud setup, Home Assistant can control it on your local network while the Mini is blocked from the internet, at the cost of the BroadLink app's remote features.

What warranty do I get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
BroadLink's UAE seller lists a one year warranty, and BroadLink has a UAE branch in Dubai Silicon Oasis. For a device at this price, most faults are handled by a straight replacement through Amazon's return window or the seller.

Who should not buy the RM4 Mini?
Chevron down icon
Skip it if your AC is a fan coil or ducted system on a wired thermostat, if you have RF curtains to control (get the RM4 Pro), or if you want accurate overnight comfort and Apple Home in a master bedroom (get a Sensibo).
