Order the U-rail version for the boxed ceiling tracks common in Dubai apartments and villas, and the rod version only for a visible pole. Without a SwitchBot hub the motor is Bluetooth only, which means control works at home but not remotely and not by voice, so budget for the hub if the point is automation rather than a novelty. The solar panel accessory is worth adding on sunny windows here, since it removes the recharge cycle entirely.

What is the difference between the rod and U-rail versions?

They are different pieces of hardware for different track shapes. The U-rail version fits boxed tracks recessed into a pelmet, which is what most Dubai homes have. The rod version fits a visible round pole. Neither can be adapted to the other, so identify the track before ordering.

Do I need a SwitchBot hub?

Not for basic use. Without a hub you get app control over Bluetooth while you are at home. The hub adds remote control, voice assistants and automations that run while you are out, which is what most people actually want from motorised curtains.

Can it handle heavy blackout curtains?

It pushes up to 16kg, which covers most bedroom and study curtains. Wide villa living room spans with heavy lined fabric are past what one unit handles comfortably, and those windows want the multi-rod model or a proper track kit instead.
