Overview

What it is and where it fits

The GARDENA smart Sensor Control Set is a starter kit for automatic garden watering. You get three parts: a smart Water Control valve that screws onto your outdoor tap, a smart Sensor you push into the soil, and a smart Gateway that connects the system to your home Wi-Fi. The sensor checks how wet the soil is at the plant roots and reports back through the gateway. The valve then follows a watering schedule you set in the free GARDENA smart system app, but it skips a cycle when the ground is still moist. That cuts wasted water and stops you from drowning plants. For Dubai, this suits villa owners with a garden bed, hedges, or a lawn fed by a drip line or soaker hose off a single tap. Renters can use it too, since nothing is drilled in and it unscrews when you move. Apartment residents with a decent balcony or terrace can run pots from a tap, though many flats have no outdoor tap, so check first. You control it from the app, and after pairing it also works with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home for voice and routines. It covers one watering zone out of the box. If you have several separate areas, you can add more valves and sensors later. The valve runs on AA batteries, not mains power, so there is no plug near the tap to worry about.

  • Skips watering automatically when the soil is still wet, so you save water and never overwater.
  • One free app runs everything, plus Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home once it is set up.
  • Screws onto a standard outdoor tap and runs on AA batteries, so no plug or drilling is needed.
  • Add more smart valves and sensors later to water several garden zones from the same system.

What to check before you order

Dubai summers are hard on gardens and on outdoor gear. The valve and sensor sit outside all year, so place the gateway indoors near your router and keep the valve shaded from direct afternoon sun where you can. Fine sand and dust are the main enemies, so rinse the sensor tip and check the valve inlet filter now and then. The gateway plugs into a normal UAE socket with a Type-G three-pin adapter, since GARDENA ships a European plug. The valve itself needs no mains power, it uses AA batteries, which is handy because most garden taps have no socket nearby. Wi-Fi reach matters in a large villa. If your router is at the front and the tap is in the back garden, add a mesh point so the gateway stays connected. There is no GARDENA service centre on every corner here, so register online for the 5-year warranty and keep your Amazon.ae invoice for any claim.

Questions about the GARDENA smart Sensor Control Set

What exactly is the GARDENA smart Sensor Control Set?
Chevron down icon
It is a three-part automatic watering kit. You get a smart Water Control valve for your tap, a smart Sensor for the soil, and a smart Gateway that links them to your Wi-Fi. Together they water your garden on a schedule and skip cycles when the soil is already wet.

Is it right for my Dubai villa garden?
Chevron down icon
Yes, if you have a garden bed, hedge, lawn, or planters fed from one outdoor tap through a drip line or soaker hose. It handles one zone out of the box. For a large villa with several separate areas, plan to add more valves and sensors to the same system later.

Will it work on an apartment balcony?
Chevron down icon
It can, if your balcony or terrace has an outdoor tap you can screw the valve onto and Wi-Fi reaches it. Many Dubai flats have no tap outside, so check that first. For just a few pots on a small balcony, a simple battery timer may be enough.

Does it need Wi-Fi to work?
Chevron down icon
Yes. The smart Gateway connects to your home Wi-Fi so the app, phone alerts, and voice assistants can reach the system. Keep the gateway indoors near the router. If the tap is far across a villa, add a mesh point so the signal stays strong at the back.

Do I need the gateway, or can the valve work alone?
Chevron down icon
The gateway is required for this set. It carries the signal between the sensor, the valve, and the internet. Without it you lose app control, weather-aware skipping, and voice commands. The valve does keep running its last saved schedule if the connection drops, so plants are not left dry.

Is there a monthly subscription or fee?
Chevron down icon
No. The GARDENA smart system app and its features are free. You pay once for the kit, with no cloud fee, no paywalled schedule, and no charge for the Alexa, Google, or Apple Home links. You only need to buy AA batteries for the valve, which are cheap.

Which app do I use to set it up?
Chevron down icon
The free GARDENA smart system app, on iPhone and Android. You make a GARDENA account, add the gateway, then pair the valve and sensor. From there you set watering days, times, and cycle lengths, and see live soil readings. Setup takes most people under an hour.

Does it work with Amazon Alexa?
Chevron down icon
Yes, after you pair the kit in the GARDENA app. Link the GARDENA skill in Alexa, then you can start or stop watering by voice and add it to routines. Handy for a quick spoken command to water the garden before guests arrive, without opening your phone.

Does it work with Google Home?
Chevron down icon
Yes. Once the kit is set up in the GARDENA app, connect it in the Google Home app and you can control watering by voice through any Google speaker or your phone. You can also fold it into Google routines alongside other smart devices at home.

Does it work with Apple Home and Siri?
Chevron down icon
Yes, it supports Apple Home. After pairing in the GARDENA app, add it to the Home app so you can control watering from your iPhone, iPad, or Siri, and include it in automations. This suits households already running Apple gear for lights and locks.

How does the soil sensor actually save water?
Chevron down icon
You push the sensor into the soil at the root zone. It measures how wet the ground is and reports back. When a scheduled watering time arrives but the soil is still moist, the valve skips that cycle. So the garden only drinks when it needs to, which cuts your water bill.

Can it handle Dubai's summer heat?
Chevron down icon
The valve and sensor are made for outdoor garden use and cope with normal seasons. In peak summer, keep the valve shaded from direct afternoon sun where you can and place the gateway indoors in air conditioning. Heat can shorten battery life a little, so check the app's battery reading now and then.

What about sand and dust in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
Fine dust is the main thing to watch. Rinse the sensor probe when it looks caked, and clean the small filter inside the valve inlet from time to time so grit does not block flow. These are quick jobs. Nothing is fragile, but a little care in a dusty climate helps.

How is it powered, and does the plug fit UAE sockets?
Chevron down icon
The valve runs on AA batteries, so there is no plug at the tap, which is ideal since garden taps rarely have a socket nearby. The gateway needs mains power indoors. GARDENA usually ships a European plug, so use a Type-G three-pin adapter for UAE sockets, or ask us to supply one.

How long do the batteries last, and what is the running cost?
Chevron down icon
Battery life depends on how often you water and the local heat, but a set of AA batteries usually lasts a season or more. The app warns you when they run low. Use good alkaline or lithium AA cells for longer life in summer. Batteries are not included in the box.

Who installs it? Do I need a plumber or electrician?
Chevron down icon
No trades needed. The valve screws onto the tap by hand, the sensor pushes into the soil, and the gateway plugs in indoors. Most people set it up themselves in under an hour using the app. If you would rather not, our team can install and configure it for you in Dubai.

Can it water more than one zone?
Chevron down icon
Out of the box it controls one watering zone. GARDENA's smart system lets you add more smart valves and sensors to the same gateway later, so you can water the front garden, back lawn, and planters on separate schedules. Start with this kit, then expand as your garden grows.

Does it connect to a drip line or sprinkler?
Chevron down icon
Yes. The valve sits at the tap and feeds whatever you attach after it, such as a drip line for beds and pots, a soaker hose for hedges, or a sprinkler for a small lawn. It uses standard G3/4 and G1 hose threads, so common fittings connect easily.

Will it keep watering if the Wi-Fi or power drops?
Chevron down icon
The valve stores its schedule, so it keeps watering on time even if the internet or gateway goes offline for a while. You just lose app control, alerts, and soil-based skipping until it reconnects. When Wi-Fi returns, everything syncs again on its own.

What water pressure does it need, and will it work on DEWA supply?
Chevron down icon
It runs on 0.5 to 12 bar, which covers normal DEWA household supply and most villa booster pumps. If your pressure is very low at the tap, watering just takes a little longer. If it is high on a pump, stay within the 12 bar limit to protect the valve.

Is it noisy?
Chevron down icon
No. The valve makes a soft click when it opens and closes, and a faint flow sound while water runs, the same as any garden tap. There is no motor hum or alarm. Placed outside at the tap, you will not notice it from indoors.

What warranty do I get in the UAE, and how do I get support?
Chevron down icon
GARDENA gives a 5-year warranty when you register the set online at gardena.com within three months of buying. Without registration the standard cover is shorter. Keep your Amazon.ae invoice. If anything fails, we can help you handle the claim and get a replacement part or unit.

How much is it, and how do I buy from you?
Chevron down icon
It is priced from around AED 853, based on the current Amazon.ae listing. Prices move, so message us for today's figure and to buy through us. We deliver across Dubai and the UAE, help with setup, and advise on extra valves or sensors if your garden needs more than one zone.

How does it compare to a Rachio 3?
Chevron down icon
The Rachio 3 is a wired controller that drives existing in-ground sprinkler wiring across many zones, so it suits big pre-plumbed gardens. This GARDENA kit is simpler: it clips onto one tap, needs no wiring, and adds a real soil sensor. Pick GARDENA for tap-fed beds and pots, Rachio for a full wired system.

Who should not buy this?
Chevron down icon
Skip it if you have no outdoor tap, or if your garden already has fixed sprinkler wiring better suited to a multi-zone wired controller. It is also more than you need for two or three pots, where a plain battery tap timer costs less. For tap-fed villa beds and planters, it fits well.
