Overview

What it is and where it fits

This does one job: it puts light behind a television that follows what is on screen, which reduces the contrast between a bright picture and a dark wall and makes long viewing easier on the eyes. A camera reads the picture and drives a segmented strip around the back of the panel, so the colour at the edge of the screen carries onto the wall behind it. In a Dubai media room or a villa living room with a large screen on a dark feature wall, the effect is worth more than the price suggests. The size band matters: this version is for 55 to 65 inch panels, and a strip sized for a smaller screen will not reach the corners of a larger one. Mount the camera where it can see the whole screen without sitting in anyone's eyeline, which is the part people get wrong and then blame the product for. It is a plug-in Wi-Fi product with no hub, so a socket behind the television is required, and behind a wall mounted screen those sockets are usually already carrying the panel and a sound bar.

  • Wall behind the screen follows the colour of the picture
  • Softens the contrast between a bright screen and a dark wall
  • No hub, connects directly to Wi-Fi
  • Works with any source, since it reads the picture rather than the signal

What to check before you order

Dark feature walls behind large televisions are common in Dubai villa living rooms and media rooms, and that is the setting where this earns its money. It needs a socket behind the panel, which on a wall mounted screen is usually already taken by the television and a sound bar, so check the outlet count before ordering. The adhesive strip sits on the rear of the panel where heat builds during long viewing sessions, so press it down properly at the corners and expect to re-seat an end eventually. Match the size band to the screen: this one is for 55 to 65 inch panels and will not reach around a larger television.

Questions about the Govee TV Backlight 3 Lite

Will it work with a set-top box and a games console?

Yes. A camera reads the picture on the screen rather than tapping the video signal, so the source makes no difference. Satellite, streaming, a console and a laptop all behave the same way, which is the advantage of the camera approach over signal-based systems.

Does it fit my television?
Chevron down icon
This version covers 55 to 65 inch panels. A strip sized for a smaller television will not reach the corners of a larger one, and an oversized strip has to be doubled back where it does not fit, which shows on the wall. Measure the panel before ordering rather than trusting the model name on the box.

Where does the camera go?
Chevron down icon
Somewhere it can see the whole screen and nobody is looking at it, usually clipped at the top edge of the panel. A camera that only sees part of the screen produces colours that do not match, which is the most common complaint about these systems and is almost always a mounting problem.
