What is the Lutron RA2 Select in-line dimmer?

It is a small dimming module that installs inside the wall box, behind your existing switch plate. It is not a smart paddle you see on the wall. It dims the light circuit and takes its orders from a paired Lutron Pico remote or a Lutron occupancy sensor.

Is it safe on UAE 220-240V mains?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The RRK-R25NE-240 is rated 220-240V, 50/60Hz on Lutron's official In-Line Load Controls spec sheet, and it is the CE-marked 868MHz variant sold into the UK, Europe and the Gulf. It is the correct hardware line for UAE circuits, unlike Lutron's 120V American dimmers.

How is this different from the Lutron Caseta dimmers on amazon.ae?

Most Caseta paddle dimmers listed here, like the PD-6WCL, are built for 120V North American mains. They should never be wired into a 220-240V UAE circuit. The RA2 Select in-line module is the region-correct part, with the right voltage rating and the right 868MHz radio frequency.

Will it fit the wall boxes used in Dubai?

Yes, in most cases. The module measures 153 x 46 x 32mm and sits inside the back box, so it works behind standard GCC and UK-pattern plates and behind EU round boxes. The real question is box depth, not plate style, so we check the existing boxes during the site survey.

Can I install it myself?

Accepted Answer

No. It is a mains-wired product with Live, Neutral, Earth and a switched live going into it. In Dubai that work belongs to a licensed electrician. On top of the wiring, pairing and scene setup are done by a Lutron-trained RA2 Select dealer, so it is a two-part job.

What else do I need to buy for it to work?

Three things at minimum. A Lutron Pico wireless remote or a Radio Powr Savr sensor to operate it, a mounting kit or plate for the switch position, and an RA2 Select Main Repeater if you want app control, scenes and schedules. Your lamps also need to be dimmable.

What happens if I skip the RA2 Select Main Repeater?

You still get a working dimmer, but only locally. The module pairs directly with a Pico remote, so you press the buttons on the wall and the lights dim. You lose the Lutron app, scenes, timed schedules, away-from-home control and voice assistants. Most clients add the repeater.

Which app do I use?

Accepted Answer

The Lutron app, once an RA2 Select Main Repeater is on your network. From there you set light levels, build scenes for the majlis or the living room, run schedules against Dubai sunset times and control the house while you are travelling. The module itself has no app of its own.

Question 9

Does it work with Alexa and Google Assistant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, through the RA2 Select Main Repeater. The repeater is what talks to Alexa and Google, and you then control lights or scenes by voice. The in-line dimmer on its own has no cloud connection, no Wi-Fi and no voice support, so the repeater is the piece that enables it.

Can I use Apple Home?

RA2 Select supports Apple Home through the Main Repeater, so the dimmed circuit can appear as a light in the Home app. Support depends on the repeater model and its firmware, so we confirm the exact part at design stage rather than promising it blind. Alexa and Google are the more common choice here.

Does it use Wi-Fi or Zigbee?

Neither. It runs on Lutron Clear Connect RF at 868MHz, a radio band Lutron keeps for its own lighting gear. That is one reason these systems stay reliable in villas packed with Wi-Fi devices. It also means only Lutron remotes, sensors and repeaters can talk to it.

Can it be retrofitted into an existing villa?

Accepted Answer

Often yes. Because the module hides in the back box, you do not have to change the plate design or chase new cables across finished walls. Two things decide it: whether there is a neutral at the switch position and whether the box is deep enough. We check both before quoting.

Question 13

Does it need a neutral wire?

Accepted Answer

Yes. This model is neutral required, and it accepts 0.5 to 2.5mm2 conductors. Most Dubai villas and newer apartment blocks have a neutral at the switch position, but some older buildings do not. If yours does not, the electrician has to pull one, or we look at a different approach.

How much lighting load can one module carry?

Accepted Answer

One amp in total. That works out to 250W of incandescent, halogen or ELV, and 150W of dimmable LED. In practice a single module covers one circuit, for example a run of downlights in a bedroom. A large majlis with many fittings usually needs more than one.

Will my LED downlights dim smoothly?

Accepted Answer

This module uses trailing-edge (reverse phase) dimming, which suits most modern LED drivers and avoids the buzz you get from cheap dimmers. Results still vary by fitting, so we check your exact lamps or drivers against Lutron's LED compatibility list before we specify anything. Unbranded site-supplied LEDs are the usual troublemakers.

How does it compare with the Aqara or Sonoff switches you also sell?

Aqara and Sonoff cost a fraction of the price and handle on, off and basic automation well. Lutron sits in a different class for dimming: quieter at low levels, tighter tolerances, and a radio protocol built only for lighting. If you want six circuits switched, buy Aqara. If you want dimming that looks designed, buy Lutron.

Why not just use Philips Hue bulbs instead?

Hue changes the bulb; this changes the circuit. Hue is great for colour and for renters, but every fitting needs a Hue bulb, and the wall switch must stay on. With an in-line dimmer your existing architectural downlights, cove lighting and chandeliers dim properly, whatever dimmable lamp is in them.

Why is there no price on this page?

It is sold through Lutron's project channel in the UAE, not general retail, so there is no honest shelf price to quote. Cost depends on how many circuits you are dimming, the repeater, the Pico remotes and the plates. We price it per project. Ask us and we will put numbers on it.

Question 19

I found it on Amazon.ae. Should I just order it there?

There is a listing for this SKU, but it has been showing as unavailable with no restock date, so it is not a real buying option. Even if stock appeared, you would still need the repeater, the Pico remotes and a dealer to commission the system. Buying the module alone gets you a box you cannot use.

How do you quote it and what is the lead time?

We start with a site visit or your lighting drawings, count the circuits that need dimming, then price the modules, repeater, remotes and labour as one package. Because these come through the distributor rather than off a shelf, allow for an order lead time. We confirm the date in writing with the quote.

What warranty do I get in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

Lutron's international product warranty applies, published on Lutron's own technical document library. In this region, claims and replacements go through the appointed distributor and dealer rather than direct to Lutron. That is another reason to buy it as an installed system from a dealer, because you keep a local point of contact.

Who should not buy this?

Accepted Answer

Renters on a one-year contract, anyone who wants a quick DIY gadget, and anyone who only needs lights switched rather than dimmed. If your budget is tight or you are fitting out a studio apartment, a cheaper Zigbee or Wi-Fi dimmer will serve you better. This is for owners doing lighting properly.

Will the lights still work if the internet drops?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Pico remote talks straight to the module over Clear Connect RF, so wall control keeps working with no router, no hub and no internet. You lose remote access from the app and voice control until the connection returns, but nobody in the house is left in the dark.

Can it turn lights on automatically when someone walks in?

Accepted Answer

Yes, by pairing a Lutron Radio Powr Savr occupancy or vacancy sensor to the module. That is popular for villa corridors, walk-in wardrobes and guest bathrooms. The sensor is battery powered and sold separately. You can still keep a Pico remote on the wall for manual control at the same time.

Does Dubai heat or dust affect it?

It lives inside a wall box in air-conditioned space, so heat and dust are much less of an issue than for outdoor gear. The bigger point is heat build-up in the box itself, which is why the load limits matter and why an electrician should not cram the module in with a crowded terminal block.

Is it Matter compatible?

No. The module speaks Lutron Clear Connect RF only. Any link to other systems happens at the repeater, through Lutron's own integrations with Alexa, Google and similar platforms, not at the dimmer itself. If a Matter-native device is what you need, we will point you to a different product line.

Can I keep my existing wall switch?

In many cases yes. The module can sit behind your existing rocker plate so the switch still works as people expect, while the dimming and the smart control come from the module and a Pico. Your electrician confirms the switch type and wiring during the survey before we commit to that.

Should I use RA2 Select or move up to RadioRA 3?

Accepted Answer

RA2 Select covers most Dubai villas and apartments comfortably. RadioRA 3 is the larger platform, with more device capacity, engraved keypads and deeper integration for big homes. If your project runs across three floors with external lighting, a cinema and shading, we will usually steer you towards RadioRA 3 instead.
