Overview

What it is and where it fits

RadioRA 3 is Lutron's whole-home lighting and shading system for houses that need more than a few smart switches. It sits below Lutron's fully wired HomeWorks line. One all-in-one processor runs the project, and everything else talks to it over Clear Connect, Lutron's own two way radio: wireless dimmers, Vierti and Pico keypads, occupancy and daylight sensors, and Sivoia QS or Triathlon shade motors. Lights and blinds end up on the same network and the same keypad button. It suits a Dubai villa or a large penthouse with dozens of dimmed circuits, multi-room scenes and motorised blinds, where the owner wants one keypad layout in every room rather than an app per brand. For Dubai, the detail that matters is the hardware family. Lutron builds RadioRA 3 in two electrically incompatible versions. The US line is 120V and 434MHz. The International line is 220-240V at 50Hz and 868MHz, and that is the only one correct for UAE wiring. Every dimmer, keypad and shade motor on the bill of materials must be an International part number. The processor is not a mains device. It takes power over Ethernet at 48V DC, so it needs a data point and a PoE switch or injector. This is not something you buy off a shelf. RadioRA 3 is a closed, dealer-only system: circuits are designed, a licensed electrician wires the devices, then the system is programmed in Lutron's software and commissioned on site. The honest limits are cost, which is project-scoped, and flexibility, since deeper changes go back through the dealer.

  • Lights, keypads, sensors and blinds all run on one Lutron network
  • Correct 220-240V, 868MHz International hardware for UAE villa wiring
  • Up to 4 processors and 200 devices each, so a big villa stays one system
  • Works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Crestron and Control4

What to check before you order

RadioRA 3 is correct for UAE mains at 220-240V, 50Hz, but only in the International hardware family (230VAC, 868MHz). The US line runs 120V and 434MHz and must never be wired into a UAE circuit, so ask any supplier to confirm part numbers on the bill of materials before you sign. Fitment here is a wall box question, not a plug question. These devices are wired into the circuit, so BS1363 Type-G sockets and Schuko do not apply. Vierti keypads mount on a flangeless square back box, and Dubai villas are built with a mix of EU round and UK square boxes, so the electrician usually swaps or adds boxes during first fix. Mains work must be done by a licensed electrician, and developers and DEWA expect a registered contractor. In the UAE, Lutron is supplied through Taxan Gulf as distributor and through certified Lutron dealers in Dubai. We specify the system, coordinate supply and handle commissioning.

Lutron in the UAE. The premium US lighting-control brand (Caseta). Available on Amazon.ae, some SKUs ship from outside the UAE; wiring and faceplates differ from UK/UAE standard, so we confirm fit.

Questions about the Lutron RadioRA 3 Whole-Home Lighting Control

What exactly is Lutron RadioRA 3?
Chevron down icon
It is Lutron's whole-home lighting and shading control system. One processor runs the house, and wireless dimmers, Vierti and Pico keypads, occupancy sensors and Sivoia QS or Triathlon shade motors talk to it over Lutron's Clear Connect radio. It sits below the fully wired HomeWorks line and well above retail smart switches.

Will RadioRA 3 work on UAE 220-240V power?
Chevron down icon
Yes, provided the hardware is the International family. Those dimmers, keypads and shade motors are built for 220-240V at 50Hz and use the 868MHz radio band. The US RadioRA 3 line runs on 120V and 434MHz. It is a different product and must never be connected to UAE mains.

How do I check I am getting International hardware and not US parts?
Chevron down icon
Ask for the bill of materials before anything is ordered, then check each part number against Lutron's 230VAC and 868MHz range. The two families share the RadioRA 3 name and look similar, but they do not talk to each other and the US parts are unsafe on 240V here.

Does the RadioRA 3 processor need mains power?
Chevron down icon
No. The processor is a low voltage device powered over Ethernet at 48V DC, following IEEE 802.3af, at or bt. You need a data point where it sits and a PoE switch or injector feeding it. Because it is not a mains device, the processor is the same unit worldwide.

Will the keypads fit our villa wall boxes?
Chevron down icon
Vierti keypads mount on a flangeless square back box and need live and neutral at 220-240V, with a dimmed live on the hybrid version. Dubai villas use a mix of EU round and UK square boxes, so the electrician normally fits the right boxes at first fix or during a retrofit chase.

Does the UK Type-G plug standard matter for this system?
Chevron down icon
Not really. RadioRA 3 dimmers and keypads are wired into the circuit behind the wall, so there is no plug and no socket standard to match. Type-G sockets and Schuko only matter for plug-in gear. What matters here is the 220-240V rating, the back box and the cable size.

Do I need an electrician or a certified Lutron dealer?
Chevron down icon
Both, working together. A licensed electrician does the mains work, which is what the law, the developer and DEWA expect. A certified Lutron dealer designs the circuit list, supplies the International hardware, programs the system in Lutron's software and commissions it on site. We coordinate both sides for you.

What else do I need to buy to make it work?
Chevron down icon
A RadioRA 3 processor, a wired Ethernet drop with PoE power for it, and a full set of International dimmers, keypads, sensors and shade motors sized to your circuits. No part of the system works alone. The processor is mandatory, not an optional accessory you can add later.

Which app do we use day to day?
Chevron down icon
The Lutron App. It talks to the processor on your home network, so the important controls keep working locally. Lutron's cloud adds remote access when you are away. Most families still use the wall keypads far more than the phone once the scenes are set correctly.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?
Chevron down icon
Yes. RadioRA 3 has native integration with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Home, so you get voice control and can mix Lutron lights into wider scenes. It also bridges into Crestron, Control4, RTI, Savant, URC, Elan and AMX for bigger AV and control projects.

Can I retrofit RadioRA 3 into a villa that is already finished?
Chevron down icon
Often yes, because the devices are wireless and no control cable is needed between them. The work is still real electrical work. Dimmers replace existing plates, some back boxes get swapped, and the processor needs a network point. Budget for making good and repainting around the switch positions.

Is it better suited to a new fit-out?
Chevron down icon
Yes, if you have the choice. On a new villa the circuits get split the way you want the scenes to behave, neutrals are available at every point, shade pockets get power, and the Ethernet drop for the processor is planned in. Retrofits work fine, they just cost more in labour.

How does this compare to the Aqara switches you sell?
Chevron down icon
Aqara is a solid Zigbee system for an apartment or a single floor, priced at a few hundred dirhams a point, and much of it you can set up yourself. RadioRA 3 is a specified villa system with engraved keypads, shade integration, dimming calibration and dealer commissioning behind it.

What about Philips Hue or Sonoff instead?
Chevron down icon
Hue is bulb led, so you swap lamps and the wall switches have to stay on. Sonoff is a budget relay. Both are fine for one room. RadioRA 3 dims the circuit itself, holds calibration across dozens of load types, and stays one system at 60 or 100 lighting points.

Can it control curtains and blinds as well?
Chevron down icon
Yes. Sivoia QS and Triathlon wireless shade motors join the same Clear Connect network as the lights, so one keypad press can drop the blinds and set the lighting together. In Dubai that is mostly about cutting afternoon glare and heat gain on west facing glass.

How large a home can one system cover?
Chevron down icon
A RadioRA 3 system takes up to four processors, and each processor supports up to 200 Clear Connect Type A devices or 200 Type X devices. That covers most Dubai villas comfortably, including a majlis wing and an annexe. Very large estates are usually pointed towards Lutron HomeWorks instead.

What is the lead time on a RadioRA 3 project?
Chevron down icon
Plan for a few weeks in total. The hardware is ordered against your approved circuit list rather than pulled off a shelf, and site work for a villa typically runs about five to ten days once the dimmers and keypads have arrived. We confirm dates with the quote.

Why is there no price shown on this page?
Chevron down icon
Because the price depends on your drawings. The number of dimmed circuits, keypad positions, sensors and shade motors sets the cost, and so does whether it is a retrofit or a new build. We price it per project after a site visit or a look at your electrical layout.

What warranty do we get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
Lutron's limited product warranty starts at one year from shipment and can extend to multi year cover when the system is registered and installed by an authorised Lutron professional. The exact term varies by document and region, so we confirm in writing what is registered against your installation.

Who supports the system after handover?
Chevron down icon
The installing dealer. Scene tweaks, keypad re-engraving, adding a room, firmware updates and fault finding all happen through the dealer's programming software, usually under a support arrangement covering the first year. That is normal for this class of system, and worth agreeing before you sign anything.

What happens if our internet drops?
Chevron down icon
Keypads, dimmers, sensors, timeclocks and scenes keep running, because they talk to the processor on your local network and over Clear Connect radio. You lose remote access from outside the house and any voice assistant that needs the cloud. Nothing in the villa goes dark.

Will the wireless signal reach across a three storey villa?
Chevron down icon
Usually yes. Clear Connect is a two way radio built for houses, and the devices help carry the signal around the building. Thick concrete, steel doors and long villa footprints still need planning, which is why processor placement and device counts are worked out on the drawings first.

Will it cope with Dubai heat and dust?
Chevron down icon
The devices sit indoors in cooled rooms, which is the easy case. Two things need thought: the equipment rack, which needs ventilation and should not share a hot store with a boiler, and shade motors on sun facing glass, where heat load is part of the selection.

Can I change scenes myself later?
Chevron down icon
Some of it, yes. Favourite light levels and simple timeclock changes can be adjusted from the Lutron App. Deeper changes, such as reassigning a keypad button, renaming loads or adding a device, are done in Lutron's design software by the dealer. Tell us how you live before we program.

Who should not buy RadioRA 3?
Chevron down icon
Anyone in a one or two bedroom apartment, anyone fitting out a rented place they will hand back, and anyone who wants to buy a box today and set it up this weekend. With ten or twelve lighting points and no shades, an Aqara or Shelly setup is the sensible spend.
