What exactly is Lutron HomeWorks QSX?

It is Lutron's flagship wired platform for controlling lighting, shading and scenes across a whole property. A processor on a DIN rail runs keypads, dimming modules and shade drives. It is specified on lighting drawings and commissioned by a certified dealer, not sold as a boxed product you set up yourself.

Will it work on UAE 220 to 240V mains?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The part that connects to DEWA mains is the QSPS-DH-1 DIN rail power supply, and Lutron rates its input at 120 to 240V AC on the official spec sheet. It steps that down to 24V DC for the processor, so the mains side is genuinely dual voltage.

Is the processor itself rated for 240V?

Accepted Answer

No, and it does not need to be. The HQP7 board only ever sees 24 to 36V DC from the DIN rail supply. That is why the voltage question is answered at the power supply, not at the processor. Your electrician wires the supply, never the board itself.

Does it fit our wall boxes in Dubai?

Accepted Answer

The processor does not go in a wall box at all. Your keypads do, and Lutron's International range (seeTouch International, Alisse, Palladiom) is built for 230V, 50Hz markets like ours. Back box type, UK square or EU round, is fixed at design stage so first fix matches.

Question 5

Do I need an electrician or a certified dealer?

Accepted Answer

Both, doing different jobs. A licensed electrician handles mains work, panels and cabling under UAE rules. A certified Lutron dealer designs the system, runs the licensed Designer software and commissions it. Lutron allows no DIY route here, and there is no consumer pairing app to fall back on.

What else must I buy for it to work?

At minimum the HQP7 processor, the matching QSPS-DH-1 power supply, a Lutron equipment enclosure or control panel, a wired network for programming, and Lutron International keypads with dimming or shading modules sized to your circuits. The processor on its own controls nothing in the house.

Which app do we use day to day?

Accepted Answer

The Lutron App for HomeWorks, on phone, tablet or an in wall touchscreen. Most families still use the keypads for daily scenes because a button is faster than a phone. The app earns its place for away control, timeclock changes and checking the house from the office.

Question 8

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?

Accepted Answer

Voice control is available through Lutron's HomeWorks integrations, and your dealer enables and tests it during commissioning rather than you pairing it yourself. Tell us at design stage which assistant the family already uses, so the right gateway and account links are written into the scope.

Can I retrofit this into an existing villa?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, but new build or a full renovation is the natural fit, because QS cabling runs from the control panel to keypads and loads. Retrofit works where there is accessible ceiling void, spare conduit, or a rewire already planned. We survey the villa before promising anything.

How does it compare with Aqara or Philips Hue?

Aqara and Hue are wireless consumer kit you can fit in a day and change yourself. HomeWorks QSX is wired infrastructure, engineered per drawing, with far higher circuit counts, better dimming quality and keypad finishes that match joinery. It costs far more and needs a dealer for changes.

How do you quote it, and how long does it take?

We quote from your lighting drawings: circuit count, keypad count and finish, panel size, shading and integration scope. There is no shelf price for this tier. Lead time depends on the hardware mix and your build programme, so we give delivery and commissioning dates in writing.

Question 12

What is the warranty and who supports it in the UAE?

Accepted Answer

Support runs through the certified dealer and Lutron's own support line, not a consumer returns desk. Firmware and security updates, including the documented post commissioning security support period, are handled by your dealer. We put the exact warranty terms for your project in writing with the quote.

Question 13

Who should not buy HomeWorks QSX?

Accepted Answer

Anyone in a rented flat, a one or two bedroom apartment, or a home with twenty light circuits. You would pay for capacity you never use, and you cannot take it with you when you move. Aqara, Hue or a mid range wired system suits you better.

Question 14

Where does the processor actually live?

Accepted Answer

On a DIN rail inside a Lutron enclosure or control panel, usually in a plant room, store or comms cupboard near your distribution board. It wants a cool, dry, ventilated spot. It is never mounted in a living area or hidden behind a wall plate.

Question 15

How many lights can one system handle?

Accepted Answer

One QS link takes up to 99 Lutron devices and 512 switch legs, and the HQP7-2 has two links. Across multiple processors and gateways a project can reach roughly 10,000 zones, which covers most Dubai villas, majlis wings and larger estates with room to spare.

What happens if the internet drops?

Accepted Answer

Keypads, scenes, timeclocks and shading keep working, because the logic sits in the processor on your own wiring and not in a cloud account. You lose remote app access from outside the house and voice control until the line returns. Control inside the home is unaffected.

Question 17

Can it control curtains and blinds as well?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and shading is one of the main reasons Dubai clients choose this platform. Lutron shade drives, including Sivoia QS, sit on the same keypads and scenes as the lights, so one button can set the lighting and close blinds against harsh afternoon sun.

Can it integrate with our AV, security or Crestron system?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The dual Ethernet ports exist for that, alongside processor to processor networking. AV control systems, Crestron, Control4 and Ketra lighting through the Clear Connect Type X gateway all integrate. Agree the integration scope before programming starts, because it affects licensing and commissioning time.

Question 19

Does it run on Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

No. The backbone is a wired RS-485 QS link, with Clear Connect Type A wireless for devices that cable cannot reach. Ethernet carries programming, processor traffic and integration. Your home Wi-Fi only matters for the phones and tablets running the app, not for the lighting itself.

Can I change scenes myself after handover?

Accepted Answer

You can adjust levels and favourites from the keypads and the app, within the limits your dealer sets at commissioning. Deeper changes, such as renaming loads, adding keypads or rewriting logic, need licensed Designer software and a certified programmer. We build that into a support arrangement.

Question 21

How is this different from Lutron RadioRA 3?

Accepted Answer

RadioRA 3 is mostly wireless and suits a villa or large apartment where rewiring is off the table. HomeWorks QSX is wired, bigger and programmed in Designer software for estate scale projects with heavy shading and integration. We recommend one or the other after reading your drawings.

Question 22

Will Dubai heat and dust damage it?

Accepted Answer

The processor sits in a panel indoors, so outdoor summer heat is not the risk. Panel location is. We keep it in a cooled, ventilated space, away from a roof void or a garage that bakes. Keypads live in air conditioned rooms, so dust is a cleaning matter.

Do we have to rewire the villa?

Accepted Answer

In most designs the lighting circuits come back to a control panel instead of local switch drops, so the wiring plan does change. That is straightforward on a new build or full renovation, and harder in a finished home. We check during survey what existing cabling can be reused.

Question 24

Can we start small and add more later?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if the design allows for it. Size the panel, containment and processor with headroom and you can add keypads, zones or shades in a later phase. Tell us at design stage which areas might come later, so the cable and panel space are waiting for them.

Question 25

Is there a monthly subscription?

Accepted Answer

No. You pay for hardware, design, installation and commissioning. Ongoing cost is optional: a support or service agreement covering changes, firmware updates and call outs. Lutron does not charge the homeowner a running fee to use the keypads, the app or the scenes.

Where does it come from in the UAE?

Lutron reaches the Gulf through Taxan Gulf FZCO, the official distributor based in Jebel Ali, and is supplied, installed and commissioned by Dubai based certified integrators. It is never a shelf purchase or a grey import. We order against your approved design and site programme.
