What is the MOES Zigbee smart socket, exactly?

It is a UK 3-pin wall socket with a Zigbee radio, a switching relay and an energy meter built in. You wire it into the wall in place of a normal socket. After that you can switch whatever is plugged into it from your phone or a voice assistant, and read its power use.

Will my UAE plugs fit it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The outlet is a genuine BS1363 Type-G socket, the same 3-pin pattern used across Dubai and the rest of the UAE. Kettles, fridges, chargers and vacuum cleaners plug straight in with no adapter and no travel converter. The faceplate is the standard 86 x 86mm single-gang size.

Will it fit my existing wall box?

Most likely. It needs a UK-pattern single-gang back box and roughly 34 to 42mm of depth behind the plate. Dubai towers and villas usually have that. Box sizes vary by developer and by the age of the building, so we measure yours first and tell you early if a deeper box is needed.

Does it need a neutral wire?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and you already have one. Every socket circuit in the UAE is wired with live, neutral and earth by design, so this is never the problem it is with no-neutral smart light switches. If a wall switch has caught you out before over a missing neutral, that issue does not apply here.

Do I need a hub or gateway to use it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It is Zigbee only, so it needs a MOES or Tuya Zigbee 3.0 gateway, bought separately. Without one it cannot even be set up. We usually pair it with the MOES Zigbee gateway, which then runs this socket plus any other Tuya Zigbee sensors or switches in the home.

Can I use a Zigbee hub I already own?

If it is a Tuya or MOES Zigbee 3.0 gateway, yes. Other hubs such as SmartThings, or Home Assistant with a Zigbee stick, often pair Tuya devices, but MOES does not promise it and energy reporting can behave differently. We only quote setups we have tested ourselves.

Which app controls it?

Accepted Answer

Tuya Smart or Smart Life. They are the same app under two names and either one works. You add the gateway first, then add the socket to the gateway. From there you get on and off, timers, countdowns, cyclic schedules, kWh history and the child lock setting.

Question 8

Does it work with Alexa and Google Home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, through the gateway. You link your Tuya Smart account to Alexa or Google Home and the socket shows up as a switch you can name and control by voice. That link runs through the cloud, so voice commands stop working if your internet drops, even though the hub itself is local.

Does it work with Apple Home?

Accepted Answer

Not properly. MOES does not offer HomeKit for this socket and Tuya's Apple support is limited and inconsistent. Some people bridge it through Home Assistant, but that is a project rather than a product. If Apple Home is your main controller, buy a Matter or HomeKit socket instead.

Can I install it myself?

Accepted Answer

We do not recommend it. This is mains work behind a faceplate, not a plug-in gadget. The circuit has to be isolated at the DB, the terminals tightened properly and the earth tested. In many Dubai buildings, unapproved electrical work also breaks tenancy or owners association rules.

Is it 13A or 16A?

Treat it as 13A. The Amazon title says 16A, but no spec field anywhere backs that number up and MOES's own product image shows a 13A badge on the socket face. 13A is the standard rating for BS1363 sockets anyway, since UK plugs carry a 13A fuse. We size loads at 13A.

Can I run my AC or water heater through it?

A plug-in water heater or a portable AC within 13A, yes. A hardwired split AC or a tower fan coil unit, no. Those are fed from a fused spur or straight from the DB, not from a socket. For AC control we fit a smart thermostat or a dedicated relay instead.

What happens if my internet goes down?

Accepted Answer

The socket keeps working. Zigbee runs locally between the socket and the gateway, so schedules and timers already stored on the device carry on and the load stays as set. You lose remote control from outside the home, voice assistants and the live app view until the line comes back.

What if the gateway fails or gets unplugged?

Accepted Answer

You lose app control, voice control and schedules. The socket holds its last state, so an appliance stays powered on or off until the hub returns. MOES does not document a manual override on the faceplate, so do not plan around one. Keep the gateway on a reliable, protected socket.

Question 15

How good is the energy monitoring?

Accepted Answer

It reports live watts and running kWh in the app, which is enough to see what a freezer, pool pump or ageing fridge really costs you each month. It is an indicator, not a certified meter, so do not use it to argue a DEWA bill or to split costs with a tenant.

How does it compare with Aqara, which you also sell?

Accepted Answer

Aqara sits a step above. It costs more and gives you better build, a tidier app and, on several products, real Apple Home support. MOES does the same Zigbee job for less. We sell both. For a socket on show in a majlis, spend the extra. For a store room, MOES is fine.

How does it compare with a Sonoff or Tapo plug-in smart plug?

Those are plug-in adapters. You push them into an existing socket and anyone can fit one in a minute. The Tapo P110 also runs on WiFi, so it needs no hub at all. This MOES is the opposite: a flush socket, wired in, hub required, and nothing sticking out of the wall.

Does it extend my Zigbee network?

Yes. It is mains powered, so it acts as a Zigbee repeater and passes messages along for battery devices near it. In a Dubai villa with block walls, a few mains powered Zigbee devices spread across the floor plan usually fix the dropouts people blame on their sensors.

Is it safe with small children in the house?

Accepted Answer

There is a child lock setting in the app that blocks local switching, so a child cannot flip the load on and off. The BS1363 design also has shutters over the live and neutral holes that open only when an earth pin goes in first. It is still a mains socket, so supervise young children.

Can I use it in a bathroom or outdoors?

Accepted Answer

No. There is no IP rating published for it, and UAE practice keeps standard sockets out of wet zones anyway. Outside it would face heat, humidity off the Gulf and fine dust, none of which suit an indoor faceplate. Keep it to living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, majlis areas and store rooms.

What about warranty and support in the UAE?

Buying on Amazon.ae gives you the marketplace return window and the seller's warranty, handled by MOES rather than a local service centre. Expect a replacement, not a repair. If we supply and install it, we stand behind our workmanship and we handle the replacement claim on your behalf.

How many of these can I run on one gateway?

A Tuya Zigbee gateway handles dozens of devices comfortably, and every mains powered socket strengthens the mesh rather than straining it. In a typical Dubai villa we might fit six to ten of these plus sensors on one hub. Very large homes do better with two gateways on different floors.

I rent my apartment. Should I buy this?

Probably not. It changes the fixed wiring, so you need the landlord's written consent, and you either leave it behind or pay for a second visit to refit the original socket. A plug-in smart plug is the sensible choice in a rental. Buy this one for a home you own.

Who should not buy this socket?

Accepted Answer

Anyone who wants plug-and-play, anyone on Apple Home, anyone unwilling to buy a gateway, and anyone switching more than 13A or a hardwired AC. Renters should skip it as well. If finish matters more than price, an Aqara or a Matter socket is the better buy.
