Overview

What it is and where it fits

The default choice for a Dubai villa, because it measures all three phases and most villas here are three phase at 400V. A single-phase meter fitted to a three-phase board tells you about a third of the story, which is the most common mistake in this category. The 3EM Gen3 sits inside the distribution board with current-transformer clamps around the incoming conductors and reports live consumption to the Shelly app over Wi-Fi, with no hub in between. Measurement is four quadrant, so it tracks both import and export, which matters if solar is fitted now or later. What you get in exchange is a number that updates every second instead of one number a month from DEWA. That is the whole argument for a monitor: a DEWA bill tells you what the property used, not what used it, and it arrives too late to change anything. With live data you can switch something off and watch the reading fall, which is the only honest way to confirm a change saved money. Fitting means opening a live distribution board and clamping around incoming phase conductors, so it is a licensed electrician's job.

  • Measures all three phases, which is what a UAE villa board actually has
  • Live reading, so you can switch something off and watch the effect
  • Tracks export as well as import, ready for solar later
  • Works without a hub or a subscription

What to check before you order

Most Dubai villas are supplied at three phase 400V, and the loads are usually spread across the phases, so a single-phase meter on such a board reports a fraction of the property and reads low in a way that is easy to misinterpret. This unit covers all three. Cooling dominates a UAE electricity bill for most of the year, and seeing the total climb the moment the AC starts is usually the first thing a client learns from it. A DEWA bill gives one figure for the property with no breakdown, so this is the device that turns that figure into something you can act on. Installation means working inside a live distribution board, which is a licensed electrician's job in the UAE, and we survey the board first because clamp fit depends on the incoming cable size and the space around the main switch.

Shelly in the UAE. Available through UAE online retail. An integrator favourite for hidden in-wall retrofits with local control and no visible hardware.

Questions about the Shelly 3EM-63W Gen3 Three-Phase Energy Meter

Can I fit this myself?
Chevron down icon
No. The clamps go around the incoming conductors inside the distribution board, which means the board is opened and worked on. That is licensed electrician work in the UAE, and it is also the point in a property where a mistake is most dangerous. We survey the board, confirm the clamps fit the incoming cable, and fit it with the supply isolated.

Will it show me which appliance is using the power?
Chevron down icon
Not by itself. This is a whole-property meter, so it gives you the total across three phases. To separate cooling from water heating from the pool pump you need clamps on individual circuits, which is what a multi-circuit monitor such as the Emporia Vue provides. Many properties start here and add circuit-level monitoring afterwards.

Does it need a subscription?

No. It reports to the Shelly app over your Wi-Fi with no hub and no monthly fee. It can also be read locally on the network, which is useful if you already run a home automation system and want the data in one place.
