Overview

What it is and where it fits

The single-circuit answer, and the right buy when you have one specific question rather than a general curiosity. A single 50A current-transformer clamp goes around one circuit or one phase inside the distribution board, and the unit reports that circuit's consumption to the Shelly app over Wi-Fi with no hub involved. Use it when you already have a suspect: the pool pump, the water heater, the villa's outdoor lighting, or a single apartment's main feed. It answers that one question for a fraction of what a multi-circuit system costs. What it will not do is give you a property-wide picture on a three-phase board, because one clamp reads one conductor. If the villa is three phase, this is a per-circuit tool and the 3EM is the whole-property tool. The value in either case is the same: a DEWA bill gives one number for the whole property and arrives a month late, while a live per-circuit reading lets you change something and confirm the change actually worked. Fitting means work inside the distribution board, so a licensed electrician does it.

  • Puts a real figure on one circuit you already suspect
  • Lowest cost entry into any kind of consumption data
  • Live reading, so a change can be verified rather than assumed
  • No hub, no subscription

What to check before you order

This is the unit we fit when a client has a specific suspicion: a pool pump that seems to run longer than it should, a water heater left on a permanent timer, or an outdoor lighting circuit on a large plot. One clamp, one answer, and it costs less than a service call. Be aware that a single clamp on a three-phase villa board measures one phase only, so it is not a whole-property meter in that setting and the 3EM is the right unit for that job. In a single-phase apartment it can sit on the main incomer and give a property total. Either way the clamp goes inside the distribution board around a live conductor, which is licensed electrician work in the UAE.

Questions about the Shelly EM + 1 Clamp Energy Monitor (50A)

Can one of these cover my whole villa?
Chevron down icon
Only if the villa is on a single-phase supply, which is unusual here. Most Dubai villas are three phase, and a single clamp then reads one of three conductors, giving you roughly a third of the property with no way to tell which third. For a whole-villa figure the three-phase 3EM is the correct unit.

What is the most useful circuit to monitor first?
Chevron down icon
Whatever runs unattended. Pool pumps, water heaters, irrigation and outdoor lighting are the usual candidates, because they run to a timer that nobody checks and a wrong setting can go unnoticed for months. Cooling is the largest load in most UAE homes but it is also the most visible one.
