Overview

What it is and where it fits

The Reolink RLC-820A is a wired 4K outdoor camera that runs on Power over Ethernet, so one network cable carries both power and video. There is no Wi-Fi and no battery. That single-cable setup suits a villa, where you can run cable from a PoE switch or a Reolink NVR out to a wall, gate or car port and get a steady feed with no drop-outs. It shoots 8MP (3840x2160) at 25 frames per second, so number plates and faces stay readable when you zoom into a clip. A 1/2.49-inch sensor sits behind a fixed 4mm f/2.0 lens for an 87-degree wide view. At night, 18 infrared LEDs light the scene up to 30 metres in black and white. On-device AI separates people and vehicles from moving leaves, cats or shadows, so you get fewer pointless phone alerts. Everything runs through the free Reolink app on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac, with no monthly cloud fee. Recording goes to a microSD card (up to 256GB, sold separately), a Reolink NVR or an FTP server. Who it suits: villa owners and long-term tenants who already run, or plan to add, a PoE switch or NVR. For that setup it is a strong budget 4K pick. It is not for you if you want a quick plug-in Wi-Fi camera or full Alexa and Apple Home control. The camera casts to Chromecast and Google Home, and that is the limit of its smart-home links.

  • One cable does it all: PoE sends power and 4K video, so no plug or Wi-Fi at the camera.
  • True 4K (8MP) detail keeps faces and number plates readable when you zoom into a clip.
  • On-device person and vehicle alerts cut the false pings from cats, leaves and shadows.
  • Records local to microSD, a Reolink NVR or FTP with no monthly cloud fee.

What to check before you order

The RLC-820A is built for Dubai outdoors. Its IP67 housing keeps out rain in winter and the fine dust that coats everything here, and it is rated to work from -10 to 55 degrees. In peak summer, mount it under a soffit, balcony or car-port roof rather than in direct afternoon sun, which helps any camera run cooler and last longer. Because it is PoE, you do not need a Type-G socket at the camera. Power comes down the Ethernet cable from a PoE switch or NVR sitting indoors, usually near your router or DEWA meter cupboard. That also means Wi-Fi range across a big villa is not an issue, since the camera does not use Wi-Fi at all. For an apartment, PoE cabling is harder unless you own the unit or the building allows it, so renters in flats may prefer a plug-in camera. Reolink gives a 2-year warranty, and the Amazon.ae listing offers a paid Salama Care extension for about AED 21 to 30. We can supply, cable and set the camera up for you.

Questions about the Reolink RLC-820A 4K PoE Security Camera

What exactly is the Reolink RLC-820A?
Chevron down icon
It is a wired outdoor security camera that shoots in 4K (8MP). It uses Power over Ethernet, so a single network cable carries both power and video from a PoE switch or NVR. There is no Wi-Fi and no battery in this model, which keeps the feed steady.

Does it need Wi-Fi to work?
Chevron down icon
No. This is a PoE-only camera, so it does not connect over Wi-Fi at all. It plugs into a PoE switch or a Reolink NVR using one Ethernet cable, and that same cable powers it. This makes it reliable across a large villa where Wi-Fi can be patchy.

What is PoE, and do I need special hardware?
Chevron down icon
PoE means Power over Ethernet. One cable sends both power and data, so you need a PoE switch, a PoE injector or a Reolink PoE NVR. None of these come in the box, so budget for one. Reolink sells its own PoE switch, the RLA-PS1.

Is this a good camera for my villa?
Chevron down icon
Yes, if you can run Ethernet cable. Villas suit PoE well, since you can wire cameras back to a switch or NVR in a store room and cover the gate, garden, car port and doors. Because it is not Wi-Fi, villa size and signal reach are not a problem.

Does it suit an apartment or flat?
Chevron down icon
It can, but running Ethernet inside a rented flat is harder and often not allowed. If you own the apartment or the building permits cabling, it works well. Renters who want something quick and removable usually prefer a plug-in Wi-Fi camera instead.

Do I have to pay a monthly cloud subscription?
Chevron down icon
No. There is no forced cloud plan. You record locally to a microSD card, a Reolink NVR or an FTP server, and you keep that footage yourself. This keeps running costs low, which many Dubai buyers prefer over cameras that lock recordings behind a monthly fee.

Which app controls the camera?
Chevron down icon
The free Reolink app. It runs on iPhone and Android, and there is a desktop client for Windows and Mac, plus web access. You use it for live view, playback, recording settings and person or vehicle alerts. No paid tier is needed for the core features.

Does it work with Amazon Alexa?
Chevron down icon
No native Alexa support here. The RLC-820A is aimed at a PoE NVR or switch setup, so it does not offer Alexa voice control or routines. If Alexa live view matters to you, look at a Reolink Wi-Fi model or ask us before you buy.

Does it work with Google Home?
Chevron down icon
It can cast a live view to Chromecast-enabled TVs and Google Home displays, so you can pull the feed up on a screen. Beyond that casting, it does not run Google Home automations. Most control still happens inside the Reolink app on your phone or computer.

Does it work with Apple HomeKit?
Chevron down icon
No, this model does not support Apple Home. If you want a camera that shows up in the Apple Home app on your iPhone, this is not the right pick. It is built around Reolink's own app and NVR system instead, so plan for that.

Will it survive Dubai summer heat?
Chevron down icon
It is rated to work up to 55 degrees, which covers most shaded outdoor spots. In peak summer, mount it under a soffit, balcony or car-port roof, out of direct afternoon sun. Keeping any camera out of full sun helps it run cooler and last longer.

Can it handle dust and rain?
Chevron down icon
Yes. The housing is IP67-rated, so it resists rain in winter and the fine dust common across Dubai. Give the lens a gentle wipe now and then, since dust film on the glass can soften the picture, especially at night when the IR light reflects off it.

Does it plug into a normal Type-G socket?
Chevron down icon
Not at the camera. Power runs down the Ethernet cable from a PoE switch or NVR indoors, so there is no plug outside. Your switch or NVR then plugs into a standard UAE Type-G socket, usually near your router or DEWA meter cupboard.

Can it record all day, 24/7?
Chevron down icon
Yes. You can set continuous 24/7 recording, motion-triggered clips, or a schedule that mixes both. Continuous recording fills storage faster, so pair it with a larger microSD card or a Reolink NVR with a hard drive if you want weeks of footage kept.

What storage does it use and how big can it be?
Chevron down icon
It takes a microSD card up to 256GB, which is not included, or you can record to a Reolink NVR or an FTP server. H.265 compression keeps file sizes down, so a card holds more 4K footage than older cameras managed at the same resolution.

How good is the night vision?
Chevron down icon
It has 18 infrared LEDs that light the scene up to about 30 metres in black and white, with noise reduction to keep the image clean. That covers a typical driveway, garden or gate. There is no spotlight, so night footage is monochrome, not colour.

Will it send me an alert for every moving leaf?
Chevron down icon
No. On-device AI separates people and vehicles from things like cats, shadows and blowing leaves, so you get far fewer pointless alerts. You can also draw detection zones in the app to ignore a busy road or a neighbour's gate.

Who installs it, and can you set it up?
Chevron down icon
We can. Installation means running Ethernet cable, mounting the camera, and connecting it to a PoE switch or NVR, then setting up the app. It is doable for a confident DIYer, but many Dubai villa owners prefer us to cable and configure it cleanly.

Does it cost much to run?
Chevron down icon
Very little. PoE draws low power over the network cable, and there is no cloud subscription. Your only ongoing costs are the small amount of electricity for the switch or NVR and, if you record continuously, replacing a worn microSD card over time.

Does it have a battery?
Chevron down icon
No. This is a fully wired camera with no battery, so it never needs charging and never stops to recharge. That is a plus for a permanent villa setup, but it means it must be cabled. For a battery camera, look at the Reolink Argus 3 Pro.

Does it have a microphone or two-way talk?
Chevron down icon
The verified specs here focus on 4K video, night vision and AI detection, and do not confirm a speaker for two-way talk. If audio matters to you, ask us and we will confirm the exact audio spec for the current stock before you place your order.

What warranty and support do I get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
It comes with Reolink's standard 2-year manufacturer warranty. The Amazon.ae listing also offers a paid Salama Care extension for roughly AED 21 to 30. Buy through us and we will help with setup, questions and any warranty claim if something goes wrong later.

How much is it and how do I buy from you?
Chevron down icon
It starts around AED 319, based on the Amazon.ae listing from ReolinkAE. Prices move, so message us for today's price plus the right PoE switch or NVR for your home. We can quote the camera on its own or as a full installed package.

How does it compare to the Reolink Argus 3 Pro?
Chevron down icon
The Argus 3 Pro is a wireless, battery and Wi-Fi camera that is quick to place and easy to move, which suits renters. The RLC-820A is wired PoE with higher 4K detail and continuous recording, better for a permanent villa system built around an NVR.

How does it compare to a Hikvision PoE bullet?
Chevron down icon
Both are wired PoE cameras for serious setups. The Hikvision DS-2CD1043G2 bullet has a longer body that is easy to aim down a driveway, while the Reolink dome is more discreet. Choice often comes down to your existing NVR brand and which app you prefer.

Who should not buy this camera?
Chevron down icon
Skip it if you want a plug-and-play Wi-Fi camera, a battery model with no cabling, or full Alexa and Apple Home control. Renters in flats who cannot run cable, and anyone with no PoE switch or NVR and no plan to add one, should look elsewhere.

Can I watch the camera while I travel abroad?
Chevron down icon
Yes. As long as your home internet is online and the camera is connected to its PoE switch or NVR, you can view live and recorded footage in the Reolink app from anywhere, including trips outside the UAE, over your phone data or Wi-Fi.

Do I need an NVR, or can I use one camera on its own?
Chevron down icon
One camera works on its own with a PoE switch or injector and a microSD card. An NVR becomes worth it once you add several cameras, since it powers them, records them together and stores weeks of footage on a built-in hard drive.
