Overview

What it is and where it fits

The Siemens RDF800KN is a wired KNX touchscreen thermostat for chilled-water fan coil units. It suits Dubai villas and apartments that already have, or are getting, a KNX system. It is not a Wi-Fi gadget and has no app of its own. It runs on 230V and switches the fan coil directly. It drives a 1-speed or 3-speed fan and one or two valves, using simple on/off or 3-position actuators. That covers 2-pipe, 2-pipe with an electric heater and 4-pipe fan coils, plus chilled ceilings and single-stage compressor units. Two spare inputs take a window contact, a keycard or presence sensor, a return air sensor or a changeover sensor. On the KNX bus it shares room temperature, mode and setpoint, so a keypad, touch panel or home server can control it and run schedules. The thermostat has no weekly timer of its own. You need KNX cable at the back box, a KNX power supply and a programmer with ETS software. Phone control, Apple Home or Alexa need a KNX IP gateway and a visualisation server on top. It fits a UK square back box with 60.3 mm screw centres, at least 40 mm deep, and the front is 86 x 86 mm. The RDF800KN is ivory white and the RDF800KN/VB is black. Do not buy it for a ducted split, VRF or wall split. It also makes little sense in a home with no KNX, because you pay for bus features you never use.

  • Runs 2-pipe and 4-pipe chilled-water fan coils with up to 3 fan speeds
  • Shares temperature, mode and setpoint with the rest of your KNX system
  • Window, keycard and presence inputs stop cooling empty rooms
  • Keeps every setting through a power cut, with no battery to replace

What to check before you order

Most Dubai towers and many villas cool with chilled water, often from district cooling providers such as Empower, Emicool or Tabreed. The fan coil in your ceiling takes that water, and the RDF800KN controls its fan and valve. It does not touch the chiller, the plant room or your cooling meter. Before we order, we check three things. The valve actuators must be 230V on/off or 3-position types, not 24V or 0-10V. The back box must be a UK square box with 60.3 mm centres and 40 mm or more of depth, with a neutral present. And KNX cable must reach the thermostat point, which is easy in a new build or full renovation and messy in a finished apartment. In towers, fan coil controls can link to building systems, so tenants need landlord and often building management approval. Mount it about 1.5 m high, away from sun through floor-to-ceiling glass and away from the fan coil's air stream.

Siemens in the UAE. Siemens Smart Infrastructure room thermostats and building controls are specified on UAE villa, hotel and tower projects and supplied through HVAC and building-automation distributors rather than retail shops, so we quote them per project. KNX models need an existing KNX system and commissioning.

Questions about the Siemens RDF800KN KNX Touchscreen Fan Coil Thermostat

What is the Siemens RDF800KN?
Chevron down icon
The RDF800KN is a Siemens touchscreen room thermostat with built-in KNX communication. It controls fan coil units, the indoor AC units fed by chilled water in most Dubai towers and many villas. It switches the fan speed and the chilled-water valve, and it reports to a KNX home automation system.

How much does the Siemens RDF800KN cost in Dubai?
Chevron down icon
We could not find it in stock at Amazon.ae, noon or Sharaf DG, so we do not publish a price. It is sold through HVAC and KNX trade suppliers. Ask us for today's price and lead time, and we will quote it together with the KNX programming.

Will the RDF800KN work with my chilled-water fan coil unit?
Chevron down icon
Yes, if your fan coil has a 230V fan motor with up to three speeds and 230V valve actuators. It handles 2-pipe, 2-pipe with electric heater and 4-pipe units. If your valves use 24V or 0-10V modulating actuators, it is the wrong thermostat and we would suggest another model.

Does it work with district cooling from Empower, Emicool or Tabreed?
Chevron down icon
Yes. District cooling delivers chilled water to your building, and your fan coil uses that water. The RDF800KN opens and closes the valve and runs the fan, which is the same job whoever supplies the water. It does not read your cooling meter or change how the provider bills you.

Can the RDF800KN control a ducted split or VRF system?
Chevron down icon
No. Ducted splits and VRF indoor units from Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG and others use their own wired controllers and communication. The RDF800KN only switches fan and valve relays. For those systems we use the maker's KNX interface or a gateway such as Intesis, then control the unit from KNX.

Can it control a wall-mounted split AC?
Chevron down icon
No. A wall split takes commands from its infrared remote, and this thermostat has no infrared. For a wall split, an IR controller such as a Sensibo or a Broadlink hub is the practical choice. The RDF800KN is for fan coils and a few simple relay-controlled systems.

Do I need a KNX system to use the RDF800KN?
Chevron down icon
It can run as a basic thermostat without KNX, set up with its DIP switches and touchscreen. That wastes what you pay for. The point of this model is the KNX link, so it makes sense where a KNX bus, KNX power supply and a programmer are already part of the job.

Does the RDF800KN have Wi-Fi or a phone app?
Chevron down icon
No. It has no Wi-Fi and no app. Phone control comes from the KNX system around it, usually a KNX IP interface plus a visualisation server, or a Siemens web server on Synco projects. Without those parts, you control it only from the screen on the wall.

Does it work with Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home?
Chevron down icon
Not directly, because it only talks KNX. A KNX server that supports Apple Home, Alexa or Google can expose it to those apps and voice assistants, and we set that up on KNX projects. Add the server hardware and programming time to your budget.

Who should not buy the Siemens RDF800KN?
Chevron down icon
Skip it if your home has no KNX wiring and none is planned, if you want an app thermostat you can fit yourself, or if your AC is a wall split, ducted split or VRF. A Wi-Fi fan coil thermostat or an IR controller costs less and will suit you better.

Can I install the RDF800KN myself?
Chevron down icon
We do not recommend it. It connects to 230V mains, the fan motor and the valves, and Siemens requires a C 10 A breaker on the supply because it has no internal fuse. It then has to be programmed in ETS, the KNX software. A wrong application setting can leave a room without cooling.

How long does installation take?
Chevron down icon
Swapping an old fan coil thermostat for an RDF800KN is usually under an hour per room when KNX cable is already at the box. ETS programming and testing add time on top. If KNX cable has to be pulled to each room, it becomes a renovation job, and we quote after a site visit.

Does the RDF800KN fit a standard UK back box?
Chevron down icon
Yes. Siemens states it fits a square conduit box to BS 4662, the UK standard with 60.3 mm screw centres used across the UAE. The box should be at least 40 mm deep. If space is tight, Siemens sells the ARG70.3 spacer, which adds 10 mm of room behind the thermostat.

Does it need a neutral wire?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It is powered at 230V through live and neutral terminals, and it also switches the fan and valves at 230V. Most fan coil thermostat points in Dubai already have a neutral because older thermostats needed one too, but we confirm it before we order.

What happens to the RDF800KN during a DEWA power cut?
Chevron down icon
It stores its mode, setpoint, fan speed and all parameters with no time limit, so nothing is lost. When power returns, it carries on exactly as before. There is no battery to replace. The fan coil stops during the cut anyway, because it runs on the same supply.

What happens if the KNX bus or the internet goes down?
Chevron down icon
The thermostat keeps cooling the room on its own, using its built-in sensor and last settings. You lose remote control and central schedules until the bus is back. The internet only matters for app access through your KNX server, not for the cooling itself.

Can the RDF800KN run a daily schedule?
Chevron down icon
Not by itself, because it has no built-in weekly timer. Schedules come from the KNX system, for example a central controller or home server that switches it between Comfort, Economy and Protection modes. Without that, you set the temperature on the screen.

Can it stop cooling when a balcony door or window opens?
Chevron down icon
Yes. One of its two inputs can take a window or door contact, and the thermostat stops cooling while it is open. This helps on villa terraces and apartment balconies, where cooled air escapes fast in a Dubai summer and the fan coil would otherwise run flat out.

Does it work with a hotel-style keycard or presence sensor?
Chevron down icon
Yes. An input can take a keycard switch or a presence detector. When the room is empty it drops to Economy mode, and it returns to Comfort when someone comes back. That suits holiday homes, guest suites and staff rooms that sit empty for long periods.

How accurate is the temperature reading?
Chevron down icon
Siemens rates the built-in sensor at better than plus or minus 0.5 K at 25°C, with a display resolution of 0.5°C. If the thermostat has to sit somewhere that does not represent the room, a remote room sensor or return air sensor can be wired to one of its inputs.

What is the difference between the RDF800KN, RDF800KN/NF and RDF800KN/VB?
Chevron down icon
The RDF800KN is ivory white and fits round or square back boxes. The RDF800KN/NF is for square boxes only and needs a separate ARG800.1 frame. The RDF800KN/VB is the black version. The control functions match, so the choice comes down to your back box and wall finish.

Can it handle 45°C Dubai summers?
Chevron down icon
It sits indoors, so outdoor heat is not the issue. Siemens rates it for 0 to 50°C operation, with setpoints from 5 to 40°C. Keep it out of direct sun through floor-to-ceiling glass, or its reading rises and the fan coil overcools the rest of the room.

Should I choose a Wi-Fi fan coil thermostat instead?
Chevron down icon
A Wi-Fi fan coil thermostat, such as a Moes model, costs far less and gives you an app without any KNX hardware. It relies on the cloud and your home Wi-Fi, and it does not join KNX scenes. The Siemens is the better pick in a wired KNX home.

Can a tenant fit the RDF800KN?
Chevron down icon
Only with the landlord's approval, and in many towers building management approval as well, because fan coil controls can link to building systems. In practice it goes in during a fit-out or renovation, not as a quick tenant upgrade. A tenant usually does better asking for an approved Wi-Fi fan coil thermostat.

What warranty and support do I get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
Siemens sells this through its building technology trade channel, so the warranty runs through the supplier that sold it and terms vary by supplier. When we supply and install it, we handle first-line support, including ETS programming changes, and deal with the supplier if a unit fails.

Does the RDF800KN need maintenance?
Chevron down icon
Very little. Wipe the screen with a dry cloth. It can be set to show a filter cleaning reminder for the fan coil, which matters in Dubai because sand and dust clog filters quickly. Clean the fan coil filter when the reminder appears, and the thermostat needs nothing else.

Is the RDF800KN a security risk?
Chevron down icon
The thermostat itself has no Wi-Fi or cloud account, so it cannot be reached from the internet on its own. Any risk sits in the KNX IP gateway or server that connects your system online. We set those up with secure remote access and strong passwords, never open router ports.
