Overview

What it is and where it fits

The PetSafe SmartDoor Connected is a battery-powered pet door that only opens for pets you have paired, and you control it from the My PetSafe app. It suits Dubai villa owners with a cat or dog and a solid door they are willing to cut. Each pet wears a small Pet Door Key on its collar. The Medium door can also read a cat's implanted microchip, but PetSafe limits microchip pairing to cats, so dogs always need the key. As a paired pet walks up, the latch releases, then locks again behind it. In the app you can lock it at night, give each pet its own hours and get an alert when a pet goes in or out. It runs on 4 C cells (Medium) or 4 D cells (Large), and a 12V power adaptor is sold separately. PetSafe says Smart Mode keeps working if your Wi-Fi drops, so you only lose app control and alerts. You do need a proper cut-out, about 216 x 264 mm for the Medium in a non-metal door up to 57 mm thick. Metal doors, glass and walls need extra PetSafe adaptors or tunnel pieces, and metal in the door can stop the reader working well. It also needs 2.4GHz Wi-Fi at the door. Amazon ratings are mixed at about 3 out of 5, and the units sold here are imported. Renters, tower apartments and anyone wanting Alexa or Apple Home should look elsewhere.

  • Opens only for your own pets, so stray cats stay out
  • Lock, open and set each pet's hours from your phone
  • Alerts when a pet goes in or out
  • Keeps recognising paired pets if the Wi-Fi drops

What to check before you order

The best spot is a solid timber or uPVC back, kitchen or garage door in a villa, up to 57 mm thick. Metal service doors need PetSafe's installation adaptors and can still upset the reader. For glass, a glazier has to make a new pane with the hole, because toughened glass cannot be cut after it is made. Never cut an apartment entrance door in a tower, since those are usually fire-rated and building management will not allow it. It cannot go into a sliding balcony door. Units sold on Amazon.ae are imported, so if you want mains power, buy PetSafe's UK 12V adaptor with a three-pin plug rather than a US one on a travel adapter. PetSafe gives no operating temperature, and alkaline cells drain faster in heat, so prefer a shaded door. Check the villa's 2.4GHz Wi-Fi reaches the back door. Tenants need the landlord's written approval before any door is cut.

PetSafe in the UAE. US pet-products brand behind electronic pet doors and patio inserts. Many UAE listings are US imports sold by marketplace sellers, so we check power requirements (UAE is 230V with Type-G sockets) and sizes before supplying. Battery-powered PetSafe doors avoid the voltage question altogether.

Questions about the PetSafe SmartDoor Connected Pet Door

What is the PetSafe SmartDoor Connected?
Chevron down icon
It is an electronic pet door that opens only for pets you have paired with a collar key or, for cats using the Medium size, an implanted microchip. It connects to Wi-Fi so you can lock it, open it, set schedules and see who went in or out from the My PetSafe app.

How much is the PetSafe SmartDoor Connected in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
When we checked Amazon.ae, the Medium was AED 1,356 and the Large was AED 1,741, both from marketplace sellers importing the product. Budget extra for the power adaptor or installation adaptors if your door needs them. Ask us and we will quote the door, parts and fitting together.

Should I choose the Medium or the Large?
Chevron down icon
Pick the Medium for cats and small dogs up to 11.3 kg, and the Large for dogs up to 45.4 kg. Measure your pet's shoulder width and height against the flap, which is 180 x 198 mm on the Medium and 302 x 409 mm on the Large. Only the Medium can read a cat's microchip.

Can it read my dog's microchip?
Chevron down icon
No. PetSafe says microchip pairing only works for cats and only with the Medium door. Dogs, and pets using the Large door, wear the included Pet Door Key on their collar. Extra keys are sold separately if you have more than one pet.

Which doors in a Dubai home can it go into?
Chevron down icon
It fits best in a solid timber or uPVC villa door up to 57 mm thick, such as a kitchen, back or garage door. Metal doors, glass panels and walls are possible but need PetSafe's installation adaptors, and walls also need tunnel extensions. We check the door before you buy.

Can I fit it into my apartment's front door?
Chevron down icon
We do not recommend it. Entrance doors in Dubai towers are usually fire-rated, and cutting a hole breaks that rating and building rules. It also cannot go into a sliding balcony door. For a balcony slider, a no-cut sliding door panel is the practical option.

Will a metal door cause problems?
Chevron down icon
It can. PetSafe warns that metal in the door can interfere with the reader, so pets may not be recognised reliably. The fix is a larger cut-out with PetSafe's installation adaptors, which move the door further from the metal. Test the reader before you finish the installation.

Does it work with a 230V UAE socket?
Chevron down icon
The door itself runs on batteries, so no socket is needed. The optional power adaptor is a 12V DC unit. Units sold here are imports, so buy PetSafe's UK version with a three-pin plug, or check that any other adaptor's label says 100-240V before using it with a plug converter.

What happens when the Wi-Fi or internet goes down?
Chevron down icon
PetSafe says the door keeps working in Smart Mode without Wi-Fi, so paired pets still get in and out. You lose app control, remote locking and notifications until the connection returns. The buttons inside the battery compartment still let you switch modes and lock or open it by hand.

What about a DEWA power cut?
Chevron down icon
On batteries it carries on as normal, because it does not rely on mains power. If it runs from the power adaptor instead, it stops during an outage, so batteries are the safer choice. Your router will also be off, so app control stops until power returns.

What Wi-Fi does it need?
Chevron down icon
It needs a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal at the door. Many villa routers sit in a front room far from the kitchen or garage door, so check signal strength there first. A mesh point or extender near the door usually solves weak coverage.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home?
Chevron down icon
PetSafe does not list Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home support for this door. Everything runs through the My PetSafe app on iPhone or Android. If voice control or a single smart home app matters to you, this is not the right door.

Is there a subscription?
Chevron down icon
PetSafe does not list any paid plan for the SmartDoor Connected, and scheduling, remote locking and alerts are part of the free My PetSafe app. The costs to plan for are batteries, extra Pet Door Keys for more pets, and adaptors if your door needs them.

How long do the batteries last in Dubai heat?
Chevron down icon
PetSafe does not publish a battery life figure in the guide we read, and the indicator lights show when power is low. Heat drains alkaline cells faster, so a door facing the afternoon sun will need changes more often. The optional adaptor removes that worry if a socket is nearby.

Can it handle 45°C summers and sand?
Chevron down icon
PetSafe does not give an operating temperature for this door, so we fit it on shaded doors where possible. The flap has a weather seal that keeps most dust out, but fine sand in the seal and the flap track should be brushed away so the lock moves freely.

Can I install it myself?
Chevron down icon
If you are confident cutting a clean opening in a door, yes, and PetSafe tells you to connect it to Wi-Fi and pair pets before cutting. Most owners have it fitted, because a wrong cut ruins the door. We usually fit one in two to three hours, including setup and testing.

Can a tenant install it?
Chevron down icon
Only with the landlord's written approval, because the door has to be cut. At the end of the tenancy you may be asked to replace the door. Many renters with a sliding balcony door choose a no-cut panel instead.

How does it compare with the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door?
Chevron down icon
The SureFlap reads microchips for both cats and small dogs and suits a similar door, but it has no Wi-Fi unless you add a hub. The SmartDoor Connected has app control built in and a Large size for big dogs, but only reads microchips for cats on the Medium size.

How does it compare with the PetSafe sliding glass pet door panel?
Chevron down icon
The sliding glass panel needs no cutting and has no electronics, so any animal can use it. The SmartDoor Connected recognises your pets, adds schedules and alerts, and locks out strays, but needs a cut-out in a solid door and batteries or power.

Is it secure against intruders?
Chevron down icon
The door locks until a paired key or chip comes close, and PetSafe describes a multi-point lock. The Medium opening is too small for an adult. A Large opening in a villa door is a bigger gap, so use Standard Mode locked, or a schedule, when the house is empty or at night.

What are the reviews like?
Chevron down icon
Mixed. On Amazon.ae the Large showed 3.0 out of 5 from 176 global ratings and the Medium 2.8 from 95, with many five-star and one-star reviews. Complaints usually involve Wi-Fi setup and key detection, which is why careful siting and testing before cutting matters.

What warranty will I get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
PetSafe's guide lists a 1 year warranty in the United States and 3 years in other regions. The units on Amazon.ae are imports from marketplace sellers, so any claim goes through that seller first. PetSafe has no local service centre that we know of.

How do I train my pet to use it?
Chevron down icon
Start in Standard Mode left open with the flap propped open, and use treats to coax your pet through. Then switch to Smart Mode so it gets used to the latch click. PetSafe includes a training guide, and most pets learn within a week.

Who should not buy the SmartDoor Connected?
Chevron down icon
Skip it if you rent and cannot cut a door, live in an apartment with a fire-rated entrance, only have a sliding door, want Alexa or Apple Home control, or have no 2.4GHz Wi-Fi at the door. Owners of dogs over 45 kg should also look elsewhere.
