Overview

What it is and where it fits

The SureFlap Microchip Cat Door (Model 38530) is a selective-entry cat flap. It reads your cat's implanted microchip and unlocks only for pets you have registered. Stray cats and the neighbour's tom stay outside, so your home stays yours. If your cat is not chipped, it also works with a SureFlap RFID collar tag, sold separately. It reads the common microchip formats used here: 9-digit Avid Secure, 10-digit FDX-A and 15-digit FDX-B. You can store up to 32 pet identities, and that memory stays even if you take the batteries out. Setup is a single button press. There is no app, no hub and no Wi-Fi, so nothing to break and nothing to subscribe to. Locking is a simple 4-way dial: Open, In Only, Out Only, or Locked. Be clear on one limit. This base model has no app-scheduled curfew timer. If you want an automatic night curfew, you need the Cat Flap Connect version instead. For Dubai homes, this suits villa and townhouse owners with a garden or a safe rear yard, where a cat comes and goes through an exterior door or wall. Tenants can fit it too, but check your tenancy first, since it needs a hole cut in the door, glass or wall. It runs on 4 AA batteries for up to a year. Sold in White, Brown and Grey/White, with a 3-year warranty.

What to check before you order

This is a battery flap, not a mains device, so there is no plug and nothing to wire into your Type-G sockets or DEWA supply. That keeps fitting simple in a Dubai villa. The AA batteries last up to a year, but heat can shorten that, so watch the red low-battery light through summer and use good alkaline cells. Fine desert dust can settle on the sensor and the seal, so a quick wipe now and then keeps the flap reading chips cleanly and closing flush. Most Dubai buyers fit this on a villa or townhouse door leading to a garden or rear yard. Apartment owners rarely have a suitable exterior door, so it fits fewer flats. The current Amazon.ae listing ships from Amazon's Global Store with import charges in the price, so UAE stock can be thin. Buy through us and we handle sourcing, fitting and the 3-year warranty locally.

Questions about the SureFlap Microchip Cat Door

What exactly is the SureFlap Microchip Cat Door?
Chevron down icon
It is a cat flap that reads your cat's implanted microchip and only unlocks for pets you have registered. Other cats cannot open it. This is the standalone base model, so it works on its own with no app, hub or internet, just batteries and a single setup button.

How does it know which cat to let in?
Chevron down icon
When your cat approaches, a sensor in the frame reads its microchip. If that chip is on the flap's registered list, the latch releases and your cat pushes through. Unregistered cats get a locked flap. The reader stores up to 32 pets, so a multi-cat home is fine.

My cat is not microchipped, can I still use it?
Chevron down icon
Yes. If your cat has no microchip, you can attach a SureFlap RFID collar tag and register that instead. The tags are sold separately. Many owners in Dubai simply ask their vet to microchip the cat, since chipping is common here and it means one less thing on the collar to lose.

Which microchip types does it work with?
Chevron down icon
It reads the three common formats: 9-digit Avid Secure, 10-digit FDX-A and 15-digit FDX-B. That covers almost every chip UAE vets implant. If you are unsure of your cat's chip type, the clinic that chipped it can tell you, or you can just test the cat at the flap during setup.

Is this the right choice for my villa?
Chevron down icon
Very likely, if you have a garden, yard or safe outdoor space and your cat goes in and out. It fits a standard exterior door, and with extra parts it can go through glass or a wall. It is a good fit for villa and townhouse owners who want to control which animals come inside.

Will it work in my apartment?
Chevron down icon
It can, but most Dubai apartments do not have a suitable exterior door or a safe outdoor area for a cat to reach. If your flat has a private terrace door and building rules allow a flap, it works. In a typical high-rise apartment there is usually nowhere sensible to fit it.

Does it need Wi-Fi or the internet?
Chevron down icon
No. This base model is fully standalone. It does not use Wi-Fi, mobile data or any internet connection. Everything happens inside the flap. That means it keeps working during a Wi-Fi outage, and there is nothing online to slow it down or worry about.

Do I need a hub or a subscription?
Chevron down icon
No hub and no subscription. You never pay a monthly fee. You buy the flap once, put in batteries and program your cat with one button. The paid hub and app features belong to a different model, the Cat Flap Connect, not this one.

Is there an app, and which one?
Chevron down icon
There is no app for this model, and it does not need one. You control it with the physical 4-way dial on the flap and program pets with the single button. If you specifically want phone control and entry history, look at the Cat Flap Connect version instead.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home?
Chevron down icon
No. This base model does not connect to Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home or any smart-home system. It works on its own. If voice assistants and phone routines matter to you, the connected SureFlap models link to a phone app, though even those stay within their own app rather than these platforms.

Can I set an automatic night curfew?
Chevron down icon
Not on this model. Locking is manual through the 4-way dial (Open, In Only, Out Only, Locked), so you set it by hand each night. If you want a timed curfew that locks and unlocks on a schedule, you need the Cat Flap Connect hub version, not this one.

How does it cope with UAE summer heat?
Chevron down icon
It copes well, because there is no mains electronics to overheat, just a low-power reader and batteries. The main heat effect is on battery life, which can drop below the rated year in a hot spot. Fit it in shade where you can, and swap the batteries when the low light shows.

What about dust and sand?
Chevron down icon
Fine dust is the thing to watch, not the heat. Dust can build up on the seal and around the sensor over the months. A quick wipe with a dry cloth keeps the flap closing flush and reading chips cleanly. It is normal upkeep for any door hardware in Dubai.

Does it need a Type-G plug or DEWA power?
Chevron down icon
Neither. It runs on 4 AA batteries, so there is no plug, no wiring and nothing connected to your Type-G sockets or DEWA meter. That makes it easy to fit anywhere on a door or wall without an electrician, and it keeps working even if the power is out.

How long do the batteries last and what do they cost to run?
Chevron down icon
It uses 4 AA alkaline batteries, rated up to 12 months of normal use. A pack of good AAs costs very little, so running cost is a few dirhams a year. A red light flashes when the batteries get low, giving you time to swap them before the flap stops reading.

How is it installed and who fits it?
Chevron down icon
Fitting means cutting a hole for the flap in your door, glass panel or wall, then snapping the two frame halves together with the supplied screws. A handy owner can do a wooden door. Glass and wall installs need extra adaptors and are best left to a fitter. We can arrange installation for you.

Can I fit it as a tenant or renter?
Chevron down icon
Physically yes, but it needs a permanent hole cut in the door, glass or wall, so check your tenancy contract first. Many landlords will not allow it, or will want the door restored when you leave. If you own the villa, or have written permission, you are fine to fit it.

Can it go in glass or a wall, not just a wooden door?
Chevron down icon
Yes, with the right extra parts. It ships to fit a standard door. For glass, you add a mounting adaptor and usually need a glazier to cut the pane. For a thick wall, you add tunnel extenders. These parts are sold separately, so plan for them if you are not fitting a plain wooden door.

Is it noisy?
Chevron down icon
It is quiet in normal use. You hear a soft click as the latch releases and the light tap of the flap closing behind the cat. There is no motor and no loud mechanism. Some cats take a few days to get used to the small click, which is completely normal.

How big is the opening, and will my cat fit?
Chevron down icon
The opening is 142mm wide by 120mm high (about 5 5/8 by 4 3/4 inches). That suits most domestic cats and kittens. Very large cats may struggle, so measure your pet across the shoulders and chest before buying to be sure they can pass through comfortably.

What warranty and support do I get in the UAE?
Chevron down icon
It carries a 3-year manufacturer warranty from Sure Petcare in the UK. Bought through us, you also get local help, so you are not chasing an overseas seller if something goes wrong. We handle sourcing, fitting advice and any warranty claim here in the UAE.

How much is it and how do I buy from you?
Chevron down icon
The lowest UAE price we found is about AED 544 on Amazon.ae, listed through Amazon's Global Store with import charges included, and stock there can be limited. Buy from us and we source it, quote a clear price, and can fit it and support the warranty locally. Ask us for today's price and lead time.

How does it compare to the Cat Flap Connect version?
Chevron down icon
This base model uses a manual dial and works alone, with no app, hub or curfew timer. The Cat Flap Connect adds a hub, a phone app, entry history and a scheduled curfew. If you want timed night lock-in and phone control, choose Connect. If you just want microchip entry, this model is cheaper and simpler.

Who should not buy this?
Chevron down icon
Skip it if your cat is not chipped and you do not want a collar tag, if you have no exterior door or safe outdoor space (many apartments), if you rent and cannot cut the door, or if you specifically want a timed automatic curfew and phone control, which both need the Connect version.
