Overview

What it is and where it fits

The H1 Pro is the switch to specify in a Dubai villa or a recent apartment where the box has a neutral and the circuit carries more than a couple of LED downlights. It sits above the standard H1 on load handling, which is what makes it usable on a heavier lighting circuit or a ceiling fan point without pushing the relay to its limit. Zigbee is the reason it belongs in a villa rather than a flat: every mains powered switch repeats the mesh, so the twentieth switch improves coverage instead of degrading it, and none of them appear on your router. Each gang shows up as a separate light in Apple Home, Alexa or Google through an Aqara hub, so a three rocker plate in a corridor becomes three controllable circuits. The physical rocker stays wired to the light, so anyone who never opens an app still has a working switch, and a power cut or an internet outage changes nothing about that. Two checks before ordering. Confirm the neutral is present at the box, because this model cannot run without it. Then count the rockers on the plate you are removing, because gang count has to match the back box and no adapter exists that changes that.

  • Handles a heavier lighting circuit than the standard H1
  • Each gang appears as its own light in the app
  • Zigbee mesh keeps the switches off your Wi-Fi
  • The rocker keeps working during an internet outage

What to check before you order

This is a neutral-required switch, so it suits Dubai villas and apartment towers built in the last fifteen years or so and rules out a large share of older Deira, Bur Dubai and Karama flats. Take the plate off with the breaker down and look for a bundle of blue or black conductors joined at the back of the box: that is the neutral. If there is only a live and a switched conductor per gang, this model is not an option and an in-wall module or a battery scene controller is the route instead. The plate is sized for the UK wall boxes used throughout UAE housing, so it drops into the existing aperture. Villa partition walls here are gypsum with conduit-run cable behind, so the box is normally reachable without touching blockwork.

Questions about the Aqara H1 Pro Smart Wall Switch

What does the Pro add over the standard H1?
Chevron down icon
A higher load rating and a neutral requirement. The standard no-neutral H1 exists to solve a wiring problem and pays for it with a small standing current through the lamp. The Pro assumes you have a neutral and uses it, which gives cleaner switching and more headroom on the circuit.

Do I need an Aqara hub?
Chevron down icon
Yes. It speaks Zigbee, not Wi-Fi, so a hub has to be in the property before it does anything. That is one purchase for the whole house, and it then carries every other Aqara switch, module and sensor you add, which is why Zigbee works out cheaper at villa scale.

Can it run a ceiling fan point?
Chevron down icon
It can switch a fan circuit on and off within its rating, but it does not control fan speed. Speed control needs a fan controller or a fan with its own smart module. Check the fan's stated wattage against the switch rating before committing.
