What it is and where it fits

The T1 module is the retrofit answer for a villa where the switch plates were chosen by the interior designer and nobody wants them replaced with a plastic smart switch. It is a small relay that sits inside the back box behind the plate you already have, wired between the existing switch and the light. The plate stays. The rocker keeps working exactly as it did, and the module adds app control, voice, scheduling and scene membership on top of it. That combination is the one most villa clients actually want: the room looks untouched and the lighting is under control. It runs on Zigbee through an Aqara hub, so it joins the same mesh and the same scenes as the wall switches elsewhere in the house. Two practical constraints decide whether it fits. There has to be a neutral at the box, since the module is mains powered, and there has to be physical depth behind the plate for the module to sit in. UAE back boxes are usually deep enough, but a shallow box in an older building is the thing that stops this job. We open one plate and check both before quoting the rest.

What to check before you order

This is the part we reach for in finished Dubai villas where the plates are brushed steel or a designer range and replacing them is not on the table. It hides inside the back box, so nothing visible changes in the room. It needs a neutral at that box, which villas and newer apartments generally have. It also needs depth: UAE back boxes are typically deep enough behind a UK standard plate, but a shallow box in older apartment stock leaves no room and that is the usual reason a module job does not proceed. We take one plate off, check the neutral and the depth together, and quote from what is actually in the wall.

Questions about the Aqara Single Switch Module T1

Does my existing switch still work after a module is fitted?

Yes, and that is the point of it. The module sits between the switch and the light, so the rocker keeps switching normally and the module reports the state back to the app. Guests, family and staff use the wall exactly as before while the automation runs on top.

Module or a replacement smart switch?

Choose the module when the plate matters, either because it is part of the interior or because the plate layout is unusual and no smart switch matches it. Choose a replacement switch when the plate is standard white plastic, because a single switch is neater than a switch plus a module and gives you scene presses at the wall.

Will it fit in my back box?

Usually in a villa, sometimes not in an older apartment. The module needs physical space behind the plate alongside the existing wiring. The only reliable way to know is to take one plate off and look, which is what we do before quoting a whole property.
