Overview

What it is and where it fits

The Shelly 1 is the answer when the switch plate has to stay exactly as it is. It is a small relay that fits inside the wall box behind your existing switch, so the plate, the finish and the way people use the room are untouched, while the circuit becomes controllable from an app. That makes it the tool for heritage or design-led interiors where a plastic smart switch would look wrong, and for hardwired loads such as a water heater or an extractor that no plug can reach. It runs on Wi-Fi with a local API and works with Home Assistant as well as Alexa and Google, which is why integrators like it. Two things to be clear about. The wall box needs enough depth behind the switch to take the relay, and shallow boxes in older Dubai buildings sometimes do not have it. And this is work inside the wall on a live circuit, so it is an electrician's job rather than a weekend one. It is rated to 15A and around 3.5kW, which covers lighting circuits and most single hardwired appliances.

  • Existing switch plate and finish stay exactly as they are
  • Controls hardwired loads no plug can reach
  • Local API, so it runs without a vendor cloud
  • One relay per circuit rather than per fitting

What to check before you order

This is the retrofit integrators use in Dubai villas where the client has spent money on the switch plates and will not accept a plastic smart switch on the wall. It also covers hardwired loads like water heaters and bathroom extractors that a Type-G plug cannot touch. Check depth: villa wall boxes behind gypsum partitions usually have room, while older apartment boxes set into blockwork are often too shallow. Confirm the neutral situation as well, since the relay needs a neutral at the box like any mains powered device of this kind. Fitting means working inside a live wall box, so we do this as an electrician's task, not a DIY one.

Shelly in the UAE. Available through UAE online retail. An integrator favourite for hidden in-wall retrofits with local control and no visible hardware.

Questions about the Shelly 1 In-Wall Relay

Will my existing light switch still work?
Chevron down icon
Yes, and that is the point of it. The relay sits behind the switch and keeps the physical switch operating the light as it always has, while adding app and voice control on top. Nothing about the wall changes visually.

Can it control my water heater?
Chevron down icon
Within its rating, yes. It is rated to 15A and around 3.5kW, which covers a typical domestic water heater and most single hardwired appliances. Check the appliance nameplate against that figure first, and have an electrician confirm the circuit before fitting.

Does it fit in any wall box?
Chevron down icon
No. It needs spare depth behind the existing switch. Gypsum partition boxes in Dubai villas usually have it, while shallow boxes chased into blockwork in older apartments often do not. That is the check to make before ordering, and the reason we look at one box on site before quoting a whole property.
